Mrs. Frederic J. Muldoon, local director of women's work for the CWA, filed a report detailing the extensive work completed by local women under the program in recent months. The document notes the first phase of the Presidents unemployment relief push and signals a continuation on page two.
Funeral services for Joseph J Keefe son of Capt John J Keefe were held Thursday at 9:90 in the Church of St John the Evangelist The 23 year old Winthrop native was educated locally and worked at a Boston print shop before an illness of four days led to his death Interment followed He leaves his father mother Mrs Catherine Harvey Keefe and four sisters.
George W. Downe announces the 1934 Winthrop District Boy Scout Fund Campaign executive committee. The Finance Committee includes Edward Farke and Elmer Dawson among others. Downie salutes past helpers and pledges continued support for a successful annual drive.
L Paul Scott directs an all star cast in the Drama League production of Rose Franken’s Another Language at Odd Fellows Hall Winthrop Friday evening April 20. The comedy drama, a New York success since 1932, is offered at fifty five cents with realistic family life themes and engaging dialogue.
Judge Frederick W. Fosdick, noted for the Jessie Costello trial, spoke to a large crowd at the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association meeting in Deane Winthrop Barn. He described the judge’s view of criminal law and the duty to balance justice for both defendant and the state.
V F W Post presents a two act musical comedy titled Behind the Scenes on April 3 and 4 at Ellis Hall. Mrs Maude Scott Palmer produced the play. A large audience witnessed strong performances with a fine cast and numerous musical numbers and dances.
Miss Doris Edwards daughter of Horace A Edwards of Hermon street and Mrs Donald Rich of Court rd escaped death Friday when their car to New Hampshire struck a soft spot in the road, overturned twice and dropped into a roadside gully. They were en route to visit friends at Meredith N H for the weekend. The accident continued on page.
Two 16 year old Winthrop boys staged an April Fool joke by rocking a surf canoe off Winthrop beach and shouting for help. Crowds and police stations in Revere and Winthrop flooded with calls before a lifeboat ferried responders. The youths confessed and were paddled ashore then given a smart slap and sent home.
The Winthrop school system reports that thirty graduates of Winthrop High School are employed within local schools. Seven graduates act as student teachers, with three moving to full-time roles elsewhere after work in junior high schools. In March about eight hundred parents attended teacher conferences organized by school officials.
The Board of Selectmen discussed routine business and awarded the police department a contract for a new Chevrolet. Chairman Atkinson, now serving as Federal Administrator, announced the decision during the Monday meeting, with details continued on page 8.
Town meeting adjourned after completing eleven articles and three budget items in about ninety minutes. The Advisory Committee recommendations were accepted on all items, with article 12 drawing the only debate before the vote to approve the proposal. A total of 77500 was appropriated including 1500 for materials under FERA. government grants could reach about 380000 for local labor if projects gain approval. John W Fielding and Sidney E Blandford served as Advisory Committee spokesmen.
After adjournment the moderator Joseph E Davison announced six appointments to the Advisory Committee Precinct 1 William C Johnson precinct 2 Edward R Thomas precinct 3 4 W McElroy precinct 4 P Austin MacCormack precinct 5 John A Canavan and at large Jesse F Dollott These replace former members whose terms expired Precinct 1 William F Abely precinct 2 Winfield S Kendrick Jr precinct 3 David S Wisely precinct 4 John H Flynn precinct 5 Walter P Simonds and at large John W Fielding.
The League schedules a breakfast dance in Winthrop on Friday May 4 with Ruby Newman's Orchestra providing music. Dancing runs from nine to two with breakfast served at one. Tables seat one to four couples and reservations are urged with William F Dealy Jr or George Jenkins.
Workmen uncover human bones 18 inches underground behind the former Limerick Park near Fort Banks on a Thursday morning last week. William Gaddis reported the find to Chief Howard Tewksbury, who along with Lieut James Douglas exhumed the scene and found a skull with teeth intact, plus neck and thigh bones. An army doctor estimated the remains belonged to a man about 25, buried roughly 50 to 75 years ago.
