Elks officers elect of Winthrop Lodge will be installed by Hugh Marshall Past Exalted Ruler of Woburn Lodge in a gala Wednesday April 9 event. Exalted Ruler David P Harrigan was reelected to a second term in recognition of leadership and lodge stewardship amid strong finances.
The annual membership canvass for the Visiting Nurse Association in Winthrop continues this week with a nutrition talk by Catherine Hayes of the State Public Health Department. The talk, in the Town Hall Hearing Room, aims to guide mothers of young children on introducing disliked but nutrition rich foods and managing special diets. The public is invited to the Monday 1 p m sessions and the association urges support through donations or volunteering.
Selectmen consider banning parking on the eastern curb of Woodside Avenue in the business district due to serious traffic hazards. They urge motorists to cooperate and await a final decision.
The board of selectmen will appoint Silas A. Overturf building inspector to replace Joseph A. Glass whose term ends April 30. Overturf, a longtime resident who has built many homes, will begin duties May 1 after previously acting in the role.
Winthrop Council Knights of Columbus hosts the annual Communion Breakfast on Sunday May 18 at 8 30 the Lecturers committee led by John P Nolan Andrew A Biggio Frank D McCarthy and others arrange the event with sub committees named. Monsignor Quinlan escorts Bishop Cushing as principal speaker with final details to be announced.
The 1941 yachting season will officially open this Saturday evening at the Cottage Park Yacht Club with opening night and its 31st annual dinner at 6 30 p m. The program includes refreshments music and entertainment with invites to members of all Massachusetts Bay Yacht Clubs. A gala night for the Sailors is anticipated with a large attendance.
The Junior High Group of the First Baptist Church of Winthrop held a monthly meeting at Miss Myra Fairweather's home on April 1. New officers for three months were elected: Doris Currie president, Myra Fairweather vice president, Phyllis Sandberg secretary, William Countaway treasurer, with Julian Davis as adviser. Refreshments followed.
Professor Robert Bruce of Elliott Street Winthrop has been named acting head of the Northeastern University Department of Industrial Engineering. He succeeds Professor William T. Alexander, who is on active Naval Reserve duty. Bruce joined the faculty in 1922 with the College of Business Administration and has taught cost accounting and business law.
Following a merchants meeting the board of selectmen announced plans to regulate parking on Woodside avenue in the center business district. The northerly side no parking rule will be enforced between Pauline and Adams streets with education campaigns first and drastic enforcement if needed.
At 7 15 Tuesday evening Box 24 responded to a fire in a three story house on Beach Road. Occupants of the third floor were rescued from the front porch by ladders. A young boy in the cellar alerted crews. The blaze confined to the cellar, slight smoke damage elsewhere. All clear at 8 45 while traffic was detoured.
Mrs. John M. Milne hosted a social evening at 9 Grover Ave to raise funds for the Winthrop Mobile Kitchen. Bridge and games drew a long list of guests, with several others contributing to the fund. Refreshments were served by the hostess.
Plans for the annual family night at the Pleasant Park Yacht Club are set for Tuesday April 15 at the clubhouse. Edward Snow will lecture on the history of the Boston harbor islands, followed by refreshments and dancing. Commodore George Hamilton predicts the event will draw a large attendance and be the best yet.
