Supreme Court Upholds Standard Oil Decree Against Monopoly

Washington May 16 The Supreme Court affirmed a lower court decree dissolving the Standard Oil of New Jersey in a major Sherman anti trust decision. The government argued two sections of the act were violated by monopolizing and restraining trade. The decision limits stock reorganizations that extend control across subsidiaries and enjoins interstate commerce until a breakup is completed. The case, begun in 1906, involved Rockefeller and associates and lasted through multiple appeals with arguments by Wickersham Kellogg for the government and Johnson Milburn Watson for Standard Oil. The ruling emphasizes the danger of large combined power and rebating as tools of restraint.
