Express Companies Added to Postal System Proposal

Washington, June 16. The sub-committee on post office and post roads debated the Lewis bill to condemn and purchase express companies and fold them into the postal system. Proponents argue rural delivery and reduced rates would boost farm marketing and curb high express profits, with zones and carload rates proposed to cut costs. The hearing notes express company charges far higher than international norms and claim a unified system could haul parcels more cheaply to farmers nationwide.
