What Vinita Was Doing 20 Years Ago From 1891
From the files of the Chieftain of June 1891 the town’s activity is sketched. J Burns visited the office, Fourth of July bills were printed, J C Hall received lumber for a new house, and a third shipment was due. Verdigris River overflowed, driving settlers from the bottoms, causing damage. Chas McClellan began a new house near the Academy where Ed Miller will reside. A fish fry on White Oak housed many ladies and gentlemen. Red River bridge approaches on the Katy were washed away, delaying a train eight hours. The opera house overflowed with Galloway College supporters and townspeople for the students’ exhibition. Crop prospects looked bright, corn small but clean and well cultivated, wheat fine. Dr. Bagby visited Claremore to see Jim Muckgrove, who is quite ill.
