Rate Suspension Report on Livestock Freight Edges Debated

Washington June 10 The interstate commerce commission cancelled its order suspending rate advances on livestock between the Missouri and Mississippi rivers citing insufficient data to judge reasonableness and equalizing conditions among Omaha Chicago and Kansas City. The old cattle rate was 14.75 cents, now 17 cents. The commission opened talks with trunk line counsel on terminal road allowances tied to iron and steel interests and debated whether terminal railroads should be treated as common carriers. Twelve terminals are tied to United States Steel. thirteen are not. The panel urged cancelling most allowances, preserving six that merit common carrier status. The inquiry spans months and may reach the Supreme Court. Freight rates to Fremont Neb. for coal from several states were deemed unreasonably high versus Omaha and Lincoln.
