Preliminary 1911 iron ore sales in the United States are estimated by the Geological Survey from returns of 26 leading producers. Total marketed ore likely 29 to 40 million long tons, down 2 to 24 percent from 1910’s 56.89 million. Lake Superior districts show a drop of 23 to 28 percent, with Birmingham down 18 to 20 percent. Tennessee and Virginia also down about 16 percent. Stock at mines at end of 1910 may partially cover demand in 1911, leaving only a small remainder.
