MacVeagh Replies to Cherokee Suit Over Allotments
Secretary Frank L MacVeagh answered a suit by Levi Gritts and other Cherokee Indians in the District of Columbia Supreme Court seeking allotment of lands and money for children born since September 1902. He contends tribal status cannot form a suit by individuals and says enough land and funds remain to provide for 6,360 children born after September 1302 while preserving 1902 allotments. Ballinger expected to file a separate answer and MacVeagh moves to set aside the injunction.
