Broader Tariff Revision Planned
Waddington July 29 The plan for broader tariff revision gains ground in both houses as a conference creates a comprom isive wool bill and a possible cotton bill with schedules for steel sugar and others. President Taft is expected to veto tariff bills before the tarf board report in December. The cotton bill may pass the house next Thursday. Democratic leaders foresee adjournment by mid August if the program holds. The wool bill heads to conference next week. The free list plan aims to compensate farmers for reciprocity losses, with insurgent senators seeking to shield farm products from free import provisions. Conferees from the House include Underwood Randall and Payne. Senate picks uncertain. The wool bill passed the Senate and sits at the Speaker's table awaiting conference action.
