Marker tells fraught path to school desegregation in Virginia
A new historical marker in Harrisonburg titled Resilience Amid Resistance honors Virginia judges who upheld Brown v. Board of Education and details Betty Kilby’s lead role in desegregation cases. It recalls the 1959 Virginia Supreme Court move to end Massive Resistance, Kilby’s experiences at a desegregated Warren County high school, and community efforts led by students from the Farmville Tour Guides Project with support from lawmakers and the Virginia Board of Historic Resources.
