Crown To Be Won At Warren County Pageant

The Miss Warren County Pageant continues a long tradition, crowning a new queen Sunday at the Front Royal Fire Department. The event starts at 9 a.m. at 221 N. Commerce Ave with an $8 all day pass, or $5 for morning or afternoon sessions and $3 for students. Miss Warren County 2016 Amy Thomas will crown her successor.

EDA seeks grant for Afton Inn renovations

Front Royal Warren County Economic Development Authority seeks 600000 from Virginia DHCD Industrial Revitalization Fund to renovate the dilapidated Afton Inn at Main Street and Royal Avenue. Project partners Mike Silek Donnie Poe and Shelley Cook previously pursued the project, citing 1.7 million cost due to structural issues and hazardous material abatement.

Retirement announced for Front Royal Police Chief Shiflett

Norman Shiflett, 57, will retire as Front Royal Police Chief effective May 1 after 33 years in law enforcement. He has served as chief since September 2012, succeeding Richard Farr. Interim Town Manager Joe Waltz announced the decision during a Town Council meeting, noting Shiflett had been considering retirement.

Front Royal residents report Reliance Road has turned into an impromptu speedway and raceway during the past year. Neighbors at a Board of Supervisors meeting cite speeding cars and loud engines, led by younger drivers from Karley’s Way, with complaints going to parents but met with poor reception.

Governor signs opioid crisis bills in Virginia

Governor Terry McAuliffe signed five bills to combat opioid abuse and overdoses in Virginia. The region reported ten deaths across Warren, Clarke, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page counties and Winchester, with four Warren County residents dying so far this year. The legislation enables community groups to dispense and train individuals to use naloxone.

Irish Spring Festival Goes On Hiatus For Year

The Irish Spring Festival will pause this year and return in 2018 with Warren County 4 H taking over planning. The event, founded two years ago by the Power of Partnerships Alliance, aims to promote tourism and hospitality in Warren County through business group alliances including hotels, parks and the Appalachian Trail Committee.

Hearing on proposed tax increase in Front Royal

The Town Council schedules a public hearing for March 13 on a proposed 2 cent real property tax hike raising the rate to 15 cents per $100. Personal property tax remains 64 cents. relief rate to be set later. A second hearing on the block grant is planned for the same night at 7 p.m. at the Warren County Government Center.
