Elkton seeks grant to stabilize South Fork riverbank

Elkton plans a riverbank stabilization project on the eastern bank of the South Fork Shenandoah to curb erosion. A $100,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries funds study and a matching grant up to $233,000 from the Environmental Quality agency, with Elkton possibly contributing $200,000 to $250,000. Experts warn sedimentation and erosion threaten aquatic habitats, noting runoff from land, wildlife, and heavy storms worsen bank loss.
