Firefighter cancer drive prompts Virginia reforms and aid
Anthony Whetzel, a 33 year old Broadway firefighter, died of colon cancer in 2018 after years of exposure to fire hazards. The case spurred Virginia to add colon, testicular, and brain cancers to firefighter workers compensation presumptions in 2020. Harrisonburg Fire Department crews now use enhanced decon, double gear, and frequent cancer screenings aided by IAFF and American Cancer Society partnerships.
