Browntown expects about 1,500 people for its 15th Redbud Festival on April 22 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Browntown Community Center. Festival chair Martha Buracker notes the traffic as locals enjoy redbud trees lining Browntown Road and the event funds the town museum housed in the old post office and clinic.
The Warren County Board of Supervisors approved a 105.6 million budget for 2017 18 on a 3 2 vote. The plan includes a three cent per 100 property tax hike with dissent from Tom Sayre and Archie Fox. About 73.9 million goes to local spending. remaining funds come from federal sources and the school budget.
Supervisor Archie Fox proposed a budget amendment to cut funding for the Front Royal Golf Course. The motion failed 3-2 with Supervisor Tom Sayre supporting it. The story notes the real estate tax rate and budget details on pages A7.
The Front Royal Town Council will reconsider Monday a second vote on special code exceptions for the planned police academy on Progress Drive. The Front Royal Warren County Economic Development Authority seeks to extend Progress Drive width, create a hammerhead rather than a cul de sac, and delay sidewalks and street lights until Town action aligns with Progress Lane.
Valley Health plans a Saturday Health Expo at Warren County High School from 8 a.m. to noon featuring more than 80 exhibitors. Attendees can meet health professionals, learn about support groups, parenting concerns and crime prevention, plus a free heart healthy breakfast.
About 450 participants scattered through Front Royal county will run trails, bike, and paddle in four races spanning beginner to expert levels. The 24 hour event covers Massanutten Mountain terrain with expected finish times around 18 to 20 hours. Participants hail from across the U S and abroad including California and Canada.
South Warren Fire Station adds two career positions boosting response rate from about 69 percent unanswered calls to roughly 27 percent. The station covers 65 square miles including Bentonville and Browntown with a population near 3,000. Aging volunteers and training requirements reduced weekend coverage, though nights improved.
