Greg Drescher, current Warren County Public Schools assistant superintendent for instruction, will become superintendent on July 1 2015, replacing Pam McInnis who retires at the end of June. Drescher pledges to build on progress, with a 90 day entry plan and outreach to constituents to shape a future plan.
Two raccoons tested positive for rabies this year in Warren County with eight more samples awaiting results. Officials say last year saw high rabies activity and urge residents to take precautions per veterinarians and the county health department.
The Front Royal Town Council kept the real estate tax rate at 13 cents per $100 of assessed value in a 4-2 vote. With assessments up about 5 percent last December, the rate effectively raises about a quarter of a cent in revenue, adding roughly $30,000. Council members Daryl Funk and Bebhim Egger opposed the measure.
A Warren County Grand Jury issued 23 drug related indictments, including charges of heroin distribution and conspiracy. Indicted individuals include Towanda Raye Harris-Thomas of Remington for distribution and conspiracy, driving on a suspended license, with court dates set in April. William Lamont Rhodes of Front Royal is charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin and has a May court date. Christopher William Spencer, 23, of See INDICTMENTS Page A4.
Attorney General Mark Herring visited Front Royal to discuss mental health programs drug courts and new laws aimed at reducing illicit drug use and crime. An open forum at Warren County Public Safety Center drew officials from Warren Page Shenandoah and Rappahannock counties as part of a state wide public safety tour.
Local dog Tubbs and owner Patrice Liepham earned fourth place at the 2015 American Kennel Club National Obedience Championship in St. Louis Missouri. They will pursue Master Agility Championship this spring and summer while Liepham continues teaching obedience around the state for performance dogs.
