Gen John A Logan dies at his Washington home Sunday afternoon after months of illness. Born near Jackson Illinois on February 9 1826 he was nearly 61. He served in the Mexican War studied law Louisville University graduated 1852 served in state legislature and Congress as a Douglas Democrat until the Civil War. He joined the Union, led a regiment, and rose to major general commanding the 15th Corps under Sherman, with notable actions at Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson and Champion Hill. He refused re election to Congress to fight for the Union and died surrounded by family and friends with a closing prayer by Rev Dr Newmar.
