Minot aviator Dewey Dorman discusses learning to fly the Elevoit Monoplane, noting wind challenges and cautious progress. He aims to fly at the July races and vows to take calculated risks to satisfy the public. Dr J T Neweye, recently ill with blood poisoning, leaves for Chicago for specialist care amid concern for his hand injury.
A Norwegian Sunday school picnic was held at Bernt Solberg’s home in McKinley township Sunday with a large crowd. A fine picnic dinner preceded an afternoon ball game between old married men and young men, won by the married men 17 to 1. they claimed better play but remarked they only played five minutes. June berries are plentiful with hundreds of quarts being picked near the city as bushes droop with fruit. Gooseberries and currants are prominent in local gardens, and berry picking has been unusually bountiful after years of light yields.
Lite Mack editor of the Hustler visited Minot Sunday and Monday sharing memories of 1887 when the town had 28 saloons, most run in tents. He recalled first brick buildings, the Leland hotel, and the town’s early lawmen and mischief. A vivid reminiscence of old Minot, with local tales and characters.
Sunday school class of Fairview honored Mr. R H Hays with a well bound Bible and a dainty ice cream lunch after games. About 25 young people attended, 22 present, praising Mr Hays as leading the finest class in North Dakota. Also notes 1600 auto licenses issued to date with enforcement planned. Paul Baldwin returns from San Antonio to visit, likely moving to California for health reasons.
Description of Queen Mary’s coronation attire notes an ivory duchess satin gown in princess style embroidered with gold thread. The gown features the English rose, Scottish thistle, and Irish shamrock, a star of India motif, and a long purple velvet train with oak leaves and medallions. Made in England, artisans spent months on it for the coronation and future Delhi durbar wear next year.
Two Velva, North Dakota, youths Willie Henderson and Livian McDowell, both seventeen, drowned Sunday afternoon in the Mouge river while swimming. Friends and doctors attempted to revive them for hours. funeral services were held Tuesday at the Congregational church as the town mourned the loss.
A prominent eastern divine visiting Grand Forks praised Norman B. Black of the Grand Forks Times calling him North Dakota's most accomplished tenor soloist. The visitor urged Black to cultivate his voice, saying he could become a leading singer in the United States.
Will B Holbein and his wife from Laniford visited Minot en route from Devils Lake. Holbein, secretary of the state association, aims to publish a monthly Journal with ads and industry notices. He seeks to keep the editorial band intact and fund yearly band concerts and vaudeville to buy new music. Jim Malone from Glenburn planted potatoes on St Patrick's Day and already enjoys several new potatoes.
The Minot Elks attended the first annual Bike convention in Grand Forks, excelling in the parade by marching as a human flag and by the Minot band. Devils Lake won the first prize for best showing. Minot aims to secure the 1914 convention and Fargo is slated for the next event. An automobile parade, with fifty decorated cars, drew praise. Mrs. James Dinnle won a prize for her seven passenger auto adorned with chrysanthemums. Elk officers elected included Morton Page of Fargo as president and Sam McDonald of Fargo as secretary. Minot Mks returned Thursday night.
