Old Settlers Meet at Burlington by the Independents June 22

Sunshine and heat set a festive mood as old settlers gather at Burlington to celebrate the Ward County association. Young Man Again in the Toils

Geo. Smith, released from the penitentiary after forging checks on the Great Northern, returned home only to resume forgery. He obtained Judge Goss’s endorsement for a $55 check that proved worthless and was jailed again to await district court. Smith, from Brainerd, Minnesota, is described as handsome and intelligent but likely insane about forgery. his mother died while he was imprisoned.

Kemper Foreman Dies of Typhoid at Minot

I A Thomas died at the hospital Tuesday of typhoid fever. The remains were interred at Rose Hill cemetery this afternoon. He was 31 and had been foreman for Geo Kemper, street trader. His parents live in Coffeyville Kansas.

Glenburn Races Draw Huge Crowd in Gala Day

Glenburn hosted a royal style event with about 8000 attendees for races yesterday. Minot band and baseball team joined the crowd. Amborn A won the 2:25 event, Noon Bells placed second, Lightning third. Five furlong dash won by Minnie S. Minot beat Bowbells in a close ball game. C A Grow assisted as starter, praised for credit. Glenburn merchants plan to join next week, band of twenty performed well. Local business leaders praised Minot support. A Sherwood farmer, C C Marks, spent two days in Minot and plans a vacation after 300 acres of crops this year.

Blind Sammie Moore Dies After Morphine Use

Sammie Moore known as Blind Sammie, a Blaisdell gambler, died around 11 am Tuesday from morphine sulphate. Police and coroner’s jury heard testimony at McJannet’s, noting Moore’s age about 35, his gambling circle, and a bottle of beer shared with witness Blood before meeting at Glenburn races.

Larsen Relates Brave Rescue Aboard Carmania

Peter Larson and his wife, returning from seven months in Sweden, recount a dramatic rescue at sea. A French fisherman adrift for fourteen days faced starvation and peril until the Carmania hauled him from a tiny boat after a harrowing three-hour struggle. Building a New Round House and Shops

The Great Northern plans a larger round-house to replace the old, widening by about forty feet with 32 stalls. A new adjacent shop will employ fifty men in peak season. The facility will be lighter, and the layout aims to accommodate larger engines previously on tracks.
