Pros Cons On Lighting Question In Wakefield Monday Election

Wakefield Michigan voters will decide if the Board of Education should erect and maintain a lighting system for the Wakefield High School athletic field by bond or direct tax. Supporters call it progressive, arguing it boosts night events and youth prospects. opponents cite other school needs and costs. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the high school gym. only taxpayers may vote. Absentee ballots available noon Saturday from the senior high secretary.

Clarence Gembolis Named Executive Vice President

Clarence H. Gembolis, son of Mrs. Helen Gembolis of Wakefield, is appointed Executive Vice President and board member of Loeb Equipment Supply Company in Chicago. He holds a chemical engineering degree from Michigan College of Mining and Technology and served four years as a Combat Intelligence Officer in the South Pacific. He previously worked for Eimco Corporation, traveling in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He is married to Carol Evans of Wakefield, a former Wakefield High School teacher, and they reside in Maywood, Illinois with their daughter.

Band Patrons Club To Meet At High School Tuesday

Wakefield High School Announces Junior Magazine Sale

Wakefield High School opens the new year with the Junior Class running a magazine sale in cooperation with Curtiss Publishing. Four sales teams led by sponsors Milo Kronsich and Alexander Gembolis compete to sell national publications. Captains include Karrien Rintamaki Clifford Brown Carolann Hodge and Christian Anderson. The program began Thursday and ends October 9. In 1956 the Junior Class sold over $1200 in subscriptions.

Wakefield Native Toivo Luoma Dies in Butte Montana

Toivo J. Luoma 41 formerly of Wakefield died unexpectedly Sunday morning at his home in Butte Montana Funeral services were held Thursday in Butte He was born October 28 1915 in Wakefield attended Wakefield High School and worked in mines Greenland Merchant Marine in World War II and three years as an industrial fireman in Butte He is survived by his parents Mrs and Mr Oscar Hendrickson of Wakefield wife Viola Koski two sons Richard and David Luoma Ironwood three stepchildren Dale Gary and Cynthia Koski of Butte a brother Una Hendrickson Wakefield and a brother Kalervo Luoma who died in 1951 in Wakefield

First Lutheran Church Hosts Seminarian Aho for Worship

The First Lutheran Church will hold Sunday morning services led by Seminarian Duane Aho from Suomi College with an offering for him. English service starts at 9 00 a m and Finnish at 10 30 a m Central Standard Time. The choir, directed by Wallace O Johnson, meets at 8 15 a m in the parlors and the public is invited.

Plichta Saari Weds Plichta in Fall Wakefield Ceremony

Arlene Saari of Wico Location Wakefield and William Plichta of Wico Location Hoyt Lakes Minn exchanged nuptial vows Saturday at 7 30 in the First Lutheran church with Rev S V Autere officiating. The bride wore Chantilly lace and tulle with a jeweled Sabrina neckline while attendants wore aqua crystallette dresses and crowns of aqua velvet. 125 guests attended a reception in the church parlors after the ceremony.

Operation Strikeback includes Elmer Haukkala aboard USS Albany

Elmer R Haukkala fireman USN son of Charles and Karling road residents is taking part in Operation Strikeback a large scale NATO led naval air exercise in September 1928. Local Schools Close for M E A Convention

The Wakefield Township Schools will close on Thursday and Friday October 3 and 4 to allow teachers to attend the Michigan Education Association Convention at Northern Michigan College. Senator Paul Douglas of Illinois is among the featured speakers. Schools resume Monday at the usual hour after the break. Ballots are urged to be cast Monday September 30.

Supervisors Name Grand View Hospital Trustees

The Gogebic County Board of Supervisors filled vacancies on the Grand View Hospital Board. Kino Salmi and James Mezzano Jr. were named to terms expiring December 31, 1962, with further appointments for 1960 and 1958 expiries. The vote was 18 yes, 4 no, one present.
