Peters bids low on road work
W. H Peters was the low bidder for reconstruction and paving of about four and a half miles of state highway on M-15. His bid was 148 670.16 plus 40 000 for cement and other costs, with a final contract over 200 000. Other bids ranged up to 167 757.33, and awards to be decided at a Lansing board meeting next Tuesday. Peters plans to start grading this fall and will truck rock from Wakefield to a rail site for shipping to the Snake river road project south of Chassel in Baraga county.

County Republicans to Meet Tuesday at Tron
The Republican county convention will be held at the council chambers in the Municipal Memorial Building in Ironwood next Tuesday afternoon at 4 30 o clock to elect nine delegates to represent the county at the Republican state convention in Detroit on Tuesday September 28 at 10 00 o clock in the morning. The convention will name candidates for secretary of state state treasurer attorney general and auditor general as well as state central committee. Wakefield and surrounding areas are allocated delegates totaling 62 for the county convention. Delegates from Wakefield include A L J Bedell Elmer Skud HL McNamara and others while Ironwood hosts party leaders as chair and secretary respectively.

Volunteer Electric Mine Opens Vast Pit in Wakefield District
The Volunteer mine, operated by Volunteer Mining Co, subsidiary of Pickands Mather, near Palmer west of the village on the Marquette range, features electric pit-car control from a central tower. A 000 ton per day crusher, brick facilities, and a large stripping program aim to start December first, with ore already found in sections once thought barren. Road crew death near Tobin's Siding in Bessemer Township
Hjalmer Olvila died in Wakefield General Hospital Friday after a gravel trucking accident on a road job south of Tobin's Siding. He was employed by Bessemer township, survived by wife and two children, and his brother Arvid and uncle Jacob Olvila live in town. The incident occurred on Tuesday with little hope for recovery.
