A collage of humorous signs and anecdotes from Milwaukee area life includes a flower shop posting hot plants and long bloomers, a car lot quip, and a church invitation. The piece also recalls Labor Day events by the American Legion with a picnic, music, and abundant food, plus various light jokes about husbands, birds, and daily life.
Residents hosted visitors from Milwaukee Cleveland and Skanee Michigan while several families toured the region. The Rock and Mineral Club plans a Sept 9 meeting at 7 30 p m in the high school cafeteria.
The Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department held its Third Annual Labor Day Picnic at Eddy Park Sunday Lake. The chilly day drew families and spectators who enjoyed social games and refreshments. Big prize winners included Walter Bennetts for a colored TV, Zeno Zielinski for a shotgun, Tom Beber for a blender, and Duane Lane for a saber saw. appreciation was given to area businesses for prize contributions.
Jane Aho of Wakefield joined 21 other Northwestern Michigan College students honored Friday for completing the two year registered nursing program. She plans to join Munson Medical Center in Traverse City in ICU and CCU units. Wakefield travels to Houghton to play Sept. 10.
The Women Society of Christian Service at Wakefield United Methodist Church will resume activities on Wednesday September 15 with a 6 00 PM potluck supper. Planning committee members include Anton Olson Richard Brown Zigmund Urbanski and others. Guest speaker Mrs Carl Maki will present Patterns and the church ladies quintet will perform. Members are urged to invite prospective members and contact the planning committee for details.
Mr and Mrs Al W Backlund of Winchester Wisconsin announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Adele to Daniel Duranso son of Mr and Mrs Earl Duranso Sr of Winchester Both are Lakeland High School graduates An October wedding is planned

The Altar Society of Immaculate Conception Church meets on Wednesday September 15 at 8 00 p m in Father Daniel Hall. New officers for the year will be installed and proposed activities announced. Circle 6 handles lunch. William Desonia of Springfield Va visits his mother Mrs Joe Desona for a week.
The Mary Ciccle church will meet at 1 30 p m on Thursday Sept 9 The Youth Choir at 4 00 p m and the Senior Choir at 6 30 p m On Sept 15 18th and 9th grade confirmation students meet at 6 30 p m for a briefing session Sunday School begins Sept 12 at 9 00 a m Finnish Worship at 9 30 a m English Worship at 10 45 a m Coffee served between services with Deaconess Committee hostesses
The Commercial League begins September 13 at 6 45 p.m. at Lakeview Alley with two shifts. First shift features Bingo's Garage vs Sport Bar, Stan's Big Dolal vs KO and Rosie's Bar, Gil's Auto vs Berts Service. Second shift at 9 p.m. has Lakeview Inn vs American Legion. others may join the second shift to bowl.
The Wakefield Area Artists League meets Thursday September sixth at 6:00 p m at the First Lutheran Church for a potluck supper and officer elections. Plans for a museum exhibit will be discussed. A program by Mrs Albin Rigoni art director will be presented. Members should contact Mrs Richard Schwieg for guidance on what to bring.
Private Candy L. Miller graduates from recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island South Carolina. She is a 1971 graduate of Watersmeet High School Watersmeet Michigan and daughter of Mr and Mrs John C Miller of Watersmeet.
Margaret Ann Kaczmarek daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Kaczmarek Wakefield and Eugene A Bauer son of Mr and Mrs Fred Bauer Racine Wisconsin exchanged marriage vows on Saturday September 4 at Immaculate Conception Church. The couple will reside in Racine.
Mrs. Emma Hanson celebrated her 85th birthday with a party at Gogebic Medical Care Facility on Wednesday August 25. Guests included her sister and sister in law, son Kenneth of Chicago, son Gordon, grandchildren Elaine and Jimmie, room mates, residents, and a California visitor Gene Kastel. The gathering featured coffee ice cream a floral centerpiece a large candles cake and congrats cards and gifts.
David Zielinski son of Mr and Mrs Anthony Zielinski celebrated his birthday on September 2. A home party featured games outdoor activities and an outdoor supper. Guests received favors and the guest of honor received many gifts and cards. Mrs Zielinski was hostess.
SP 4 Henry Werthein returns from a year in Vietnam to visit his mother and relatives. After furlough he will report to Fort Carson Colorado where he will be stationed. He has served a year and a half. He is the son of Mrs Mary Werthein of 102 Ahola.
Admissions list from Aug 30 to Sept 5 shows patients from Wakefield Bessemer Bergland Ironwood and other towns with medical and surgical cases. Discharges include Miss Berg Mrs Lampi Mr Poremski Lori Kangas Kalember Forte Nurmi Dellich and others returning home.
Wakefield police investigated a August 26 crash on Harrison Street involving Gene Ozzello 34 with a parked car owned by Dwight Lundeby. Ozzello cited for no proof of insurance. On September 5 Bertha Nasi 714 Sunset Road Ironwood struck three parked cars on Brotherton Street, cited for failure to report accident damages. At 10:45 p m September 5 Roderick Newman 17 Rt 1 Wakefield cited for failing to control after striking Norma Skolasinski’s parked car near Ziggy's Food Shop. moderate damage reported.
