Wakefield voters set Plebiscite on lake shore land sale
Wakefield residents will vote next Tuesday September 9 at city hall on two measures. Proposal 1 asks approval to vacate a portion of Lake Shore Drive and Proposal 2 seeks permission to sell or dispose of the west 555.5 feet of lake shore land near Sunday Lake for educational recreational or industrial use. Polls open 7 a m to 8 p m with bids opening September 10 if the sale is approved.

Fire Destroys Connor Plant near Thomaston Mill
A fire at Connor Forest Industries Mill in Thomaston destroyed an 80 by 70 foot maintenance shop and its machinery. Wakefield firefighters fought the blaze from 4:30 p.m. until it was out about 6 p.m. Damages run to thousands, with an insurance adjuster expected next day.

Sergeant Otto A. Korpela of Wakefield is a supply inventory specialist in the Alaskan Air Command’s 21st Supply Squadron at Elmendorf AFB Alaska. The unit earned a U S Air Force Zero Defects Award for exceptional performance. He is a Wakefield High School graduate who attended Gogebic Community College Ironwood. State Highway Commission Seeks Bids for Upper Peninsula Resurfacing
The State Highway Commission will take bids December 16 in Escanaba for resurfacing 46.2 miles across five Upper Peninsula counties as part of a 6 million dollar annual program for 1969 0. The project covers portions of M 16 M 28 and US 2 in Delta Gogebic Houghton Ontonagon and Schoolcraft counties with 12 miles of M 28 in Houghton County to be patching.

Labor Day Picnic a Successful Event at Eddy Park
The Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department sponsored the first annual Labor Day Picnic at Eddy Park with perfect weather. Activities included social games, a fishing contest, boat rides, and evening dancing by Dons Trio. Winners earned fishing rods and reels, with big prizes including an Admiral TV, shotgun, clock radio, and electric knife. Gordon Erickson won the 10 pound ham door prize.
