Mrs Joseph Patyk is named chairman of Circle No 4 at St Marys Church with Eugene Taylor as treasurer. Mr and Mrs Walter Fisher announce the birth of a daughter at Wakefield Hospital weighing nine pounds two ounces born Monday evening.
A federal grand jury indicted Frank D. McKay and 14 others on mail fraud and related charges. The case accuses McKay of shaking down liquor distillers for about 500000 and attempting to collect 9918 from Edsel Ford for a campaign deficit, plus defrauding Grand Rapids on a 2225000 bond issue. The eight count liquor indictment carries up to 40 years if all counts are proved.
The city started erecting poles to hang holiday decor this week and will add festooning and lights early next week. The Chamber of Commerce urged December setup for shoppers, and Lutey Greenhouses of Ironwood will supply and erect the decorations at a total cost of $100, down from $140 last year.
Pickands Mather shipped 2,776,385 tons from Gogebic range in 1940 season. Plymouth open pit led with 706,658 tons, Anvil-Palms 664,800, Newport 505,982, Sunday Lake 572,306, Carey 157,547, Volunteer 150,341. Wakefield district total 1,588,964 tons. Six Gogebic mines exceed 10,000,000 tons per Skillings Mining Review data through 1939.
Mrs. Matilda Martinson mother of Mrs. Paul Thompson died Saturday noon in Ishpeming after a long illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Ishpeming. She leaves three daughters and a son, with Detroit residents among survivors. The Thompson family and relatives from Detroit attended the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mackey and sons Dale and Peter returned to Minneapolis after a weekend visit with relatives in Ishpeming and Detroit.
Mrs Walter Simchak and twin sons were discharged from Wakefield hospital Tuesday. Mrs Charles Balanger and baby were dismissed from Wakefield hospital Monday. Mrs Isaac Lahti Brotherton location admitted to Wakefield hospital Monday for medical care. Mrs E W Steinert visiting Chicago for business and pleasure. Miss Janet Nelson returned from Ashland after Thanksgiving with grandmother. Clarence Campbell returned from Grandview Wisconsin for Thanksgiving with parents. Mrs E Steinert Oshkosh Wis visiting son and daughter in law. Mrs P J Delmet left for Whittier California to spend winter via Evanston Wye. Oscar Danielson family returned from Negaunee. Mrs Ivan Buck received word of brother Joseph Zarda death Mattoon Wis survived by two sons and three siblings. Mr and Mrs Jake Ulrey and son Paul Stephen returned to Pontiac after two weeks here with Jerry Pellerin family. Mrs Ulrey is formerly Isabelle Kruger.
Miss Violet Marjorie Zielinski daughter of Mr and Mrs Anton Zielinski Smith Street became the bride of John E Bonovetz son of John Bonovetz Bessemer in a 9 am ceremony at Marys Catholic Church The Rev Thomas Drengacz officiated The gown white transparent velvet with fitted bodice fared skirt and train and a pink throat clip The bride wore a long net veil with white velvet tiara and carried a prayer book The wedding party included Mrs Peter Rosa Milwaukee matron of honor and bridesmaids Miss Emily Bonovet and others in various velvet gowns The church was decorated with flowers A reception followed at the Sunday Lake Gun Club About 100 attended The couple will reside at 404 North Sophie Street Bessemer after December 1 The groom is a post office clerk in Bessemer Out of town guests included Davitzs Rosa Radowskis Turkal family and others
The city commission met with three members present and Cavender as mayor pro tem. They reviewed the fire department report noting chimney fires each fall and discussed owner responsibility to reduce hazards. The board accepted the lowest bid from Cleon Motor Co for a project pending Kuivinen’s approval and eyed WPA street and utility surveys to hire at least 15 men.
Wakefield taxes become payable next Monday at the city treasurer’s office. A total of 169402.27 is spread against city real and personal property, with 92408.41 to the school district and 65076.61 to the county. County road tax is 11917.25 and city tax 119585.92 was due July 1. Total rate is 37.89 per hundred and 22.21 per thousand on valuation. Payments accepted until January 10, 1940, after which a penalty applies.
A public supper will be served in the parlors of the Methodist church next Saturday December 5 beginning at 5 30 p m and continuing until all are served. The public is invited to attend and the following will be the hostesses.
Sgt and Mrs Ray Katke and their children traveled from Pontiac and Big Rapids after the death of Mrs Jensen mother of Mrs Katke. The funeral took place in Big Rapids on Wednesday. Mrs Jensen had been living with her daughter in Pontiac and was formerly from Big Rapids.
