Newport iron mine to add new shaft near Ironwood
A major project at the Newport iron mine in Ironwood Michigan aims to sink a new vertical shaft 13 ft by 21 ft 1 in, with six compartments. The shaft reaches 2,579 ft below surface at the 28th level and will be powered by a 2,600 hp generator set and two 3,600 cu ft per minute air compressors. The plan includes fireproof buildings, hoists, pumps, and a new headframe, with completion expected late 1933 or early 1934 and a projected $1,000,000 outlay.

Mining Companies Distribute Turkeys on Holiday Hope
More than 700 turkeys were distributed this week to employees of Wakefield Iron, Plymouth mines, Newata Ironwood, and Caryaturley in acknowledgment of safety records. Wakefield Iron received 125 turkeys for a year with no lost time accidents and Plymouth got about 10 turkeys.

Dr Ruthven Urges Purchase of Christmas Seals
Dr Alexander G Ruthven president of the Veen of Michigan and chairman of the State Christmas Seal Honorary Committee urges wholehearted support for the 1930 sale. Thanksgiving Day will open the drive with 600 seals sent to Gogebic county residents. In 1929 Gogebic County bought $2056.83 worth of seals, an average 6.47 cents per person, compared with 4.81 cents statewide. He says the sale funds tuberculosis defense as unemployment and poor diets threaten rising deaths and urges all who can to buy to save lives and fund preventive measures.

The Royal Neighbors of America met in Town Hall Thursday. The Marenisco Affirmative Debate team defeated Bergland Negative by 30 points. Team members were Virginia Mec Nicholas, Gladys Pratt and Norman Olson with Lorraine Bittner as chair and Clifford Diotte as timekeeper. Ironwood judges included Mr. and Mrs. Porter and Mr. Huntwork. Lutheran services were held Tuesday in Town Hall, with Rev Nickles officiating, and Sunday School met at Roosevelt School. Mrs. Whitburn and son Donald went to Detroit for medical care, visiting relatives. Marenisco schools closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.
