Michigan and national figures point to a booming economy driven by heavy defense orders and rising retail sales. The 1940 Business Week index hits 138.6 as plants run at full speed to stock dealers for arms production, while farm prices rise and small towns show population shifts toward rural areas.
G M Cannon announces promotions at M A Hanna affecting Iron River properties effective January 1 1941. Russel C Fish becomes general superintendent of the Minnesota district with Hibbing HQs, replacing the late W B Craig. S E Quayle advances to general superintendent of the Michigan district at Iron River, and Walter E Dewald is promoted to chief engineer of the Michigan district. The Hanna mines in Michigan and Minnesota remain busy with about 30,000 tons of ore left to ship this navigation season.
Among 6 756 students at Michigan State College for 1940 41, 33 are from Gogebic county. The list includes Godfrey Agriesti, William Aho, Mary Bonino, Milton Brasch, Doris Carlson, Lloyd Champion, Margaret Cleon, John Dianich, Catherine Driscoll, and others. Foreign representation spans Canada Chile China Holland South Africa and Siam.
Mr and Mrs Victor Nurmi announce the marriage of their daughter Ina of Flint to John Franck of Battle Creek. The ceremony occurred Saturday Oct 19 in Big Rapids Michigan. Ina studied stenography at Ferris Institute and now works in Flint. John is Ferris Institute graduate and an accountant in Battle Creek.
City and township schools close Wednesday afternoon for Thanksgiving holidays and reopen Monday November 25. Many instructors living in nearby towns plan to spend the weekend at their parents homes.
Gust Moline formerly of Wakefield died November 8 in a Neenah Wisconsin hotel after a paralytic stroke. He was unmarried and survived by a brother Axel Moline of Pepin Wisconsin. He left Wakefield about ten years ago.
Northern Michigan fire towers may serve in state defense plans as towermen equipped with radios spot approaching aircraft during maneuvers. Of 75 UP fire towers, 32 have short wave sets with 22 more planned by spring, enabling direct contact with district offices and regional headquarters.
Parents of twin sons Mr Walter Simchak and Mrs Simchak welcomed two boys born at 4 30 Tuesday morning at Wake field hospital. One baby weighed five pounds five and a quarter ounces the other six pounds ten ounces.
Coach Trewyn drills the Depadu a led Cardinals for a strenuous four day prep before the opener with DePadua of Ashland. Losses in last season’s front line leave Wilson Maki and Radowski at guard and forward, with many players from last year’s B team stepping up. The coach will not name a starting five until game time as he tests front line combinations and aims for height in a ten man first team. The Parochials are expected to be strong and competitive in Northern Wisconsin.
The funeral for Eugene Taylor who died last Friday morning was held at the Taylor residence at 1 30 and at the Methodist church at 2 oclock with Rev. Paul M Jarvis officiating. Mrs H L Trezise played the organ during the service. Burial followed at Lakeview cemetery with ballbearers Carl Verch Wallace Porter Allan Britton Paul Verch Roy Porter and Earl Angus. Out of town relatives attending included Mrs Lucy Gross of Marquette Mrs William Sweetman of Hibbing Mr and Mrs Anthony Gross of Palmer Mr and Mrs Bernard Decoster of Hibbing Mrs Chester Stanley of Marquette Miss Betty Ann Lewandowski of Hibbing and John Taylor of Ontonagon.
Sergeant and Mrs Raymond Katke and family attended services in Pontiac for Mrs Mary Jensen mother of Mrs. . Jensen died last Sunday. Teppo left Wednesday for Chicago to visit Mr and Mrs Walter Power for a month.
Upper Peninsula Sportwriters Association selected the U P All Star football squad with three Wakefield players honored led by 142 pound guard Lee Wilson. Wilson and Robert Bergeron of Kingsford secured guard spots, with Zurich at end and Joseph Sanchez at fullback earning spots. Ironwood’s Augustyniak made the first team at end. honorable mentions included Salmi Curik Wrench of Ironwood and Ellis of Bessemer.
Miss Jeanette Cavender left on Sat Mrs William Thornton Ashland is a guest of Mr and Mrs Jack Strough Whe location Mr and Mrs Jacob Alrey and son Paul Steven of Pontiac are guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Jerry Pellerin Verona Clarence Eckert of Marquette visited over the weekend at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Albert Eckert at the Wico location William Kuivinen and James Trebilcock returned Monday from Lansing where they spent several days interviewing state officials on city business Miss Mida Tyyni employed in Marquette visited over the weekend at the home of her mother at the Plymouth location She returned Monday morning Trooper and Mrs Anne Maki of Newberry spent several days this week at the home of Mr and Mrs Mike Rydeski They also visited with other relatives while here Kenneth Vuncan superintendent of the Plymouth mine left Monday evening for New Haven Conn where he will spend a few days with his son Bob a student at Yale university Miss Margie Mezzano returned to Iron Mountain after a two weeks vacation at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs James Mezzano Sr She also attended the Michigan Minnesota football game at Minneapolis Miss Emily Parker left Wednesday afternoon for Sault Ste Marie where she will spend the weekend at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs James McGraw left Wednesday to spend the Thanksgiving holidays as guests of Mr and Mrs Ed Anderson and Mr and Mrs Thomas Wills of Negaunee
