Commission to appoint new assessor discussed at city meeting

The city commission met Wednesday with a full agenda. An assessor appointment was discussed and delayed until early next week for all commissioners to act. State highway issues and snow removal contracts were also noted along with monthly counts for chicken pox births deaths and city finances.

Wakefield Hosts Tri-State Debate League Invitational

Wakefield High School hosts thirty four debate teams from ten schools for a full day invitational. The tournament uses two halves with four rounds, morning and afternoon, tackling differing Michigan and national questions about federal power. Lunches will be provided for over one hundred debaters and officials.

Mrs. Hannah Wakefield Pioneer Dies at 75

Mrs. Hannah Lusa Wakefield Pioneer, 75, died Tuesday at 1 50 pm at her son Elmer Lusa’s home after nine years of illness. Born July 23, 1865 in Kuortane Finland she had lived in Wakefield 48 years and is survived by son Elmer daughters Lillian Shannon and Amy Martin eight grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 1 30 pm at the Lusa home and 2 pm at Finnish National Lutheran church officiated by Rev Jacob Hirvi. Burial Lakeview Cemetery.

DeMolay Charter Awarded At Wakefield Ceremony

Wakefield DeMolay chapter receives its official charter from Dad Harold F. Koch amid installation rites last Saturday night. Jack Peters, son of Mrs. Ida Peters, is commended for the chapter’s progress as the charter is presented in the name of the grand council. Democrats Win Narrow City Victory Amid Poll Confusion

Voters in the city cast a record general election turnout with Democrats gaining a slim majority in most races. Harry F. Kelly narrowly led for secretary of state, Arthur Pertile triumphed by 7 votes for sheriff, and Kenneth MacFarlane edged out Arthur Pertile in the county ticket race. Statewide returns show Wendell Willkie winning the state by a small margin, with ticket splitting noted across offices. Total city vote reached 1734 of 1839 registered amid wet weather and light delays.

Kin of Robert Burns Dies in Marinette Funeral Rites

Robert A. Burns and his sister Mrs. A J Moran were summoned to Marinette Saturday as their grandmother Mrs. Andrew Behrendt fell seriously ill. Mrs Behrendt died Sunday at age 89 and funeral services were held Wednesday morning in Marinette.
