Wakefield City Manager George Meholick Jr. will resign effective June 1 after weeks of indecision by the council He stated he will assume the city manager role in Negaunee and the council praised his tenure as Wakefield's leader.
Three Wakefield residents will graduate from Michigan Tech at the commencement Saturday May 30. Michigan Tech will confer 282 bachelor and advanced degrees in 18 technologies. John A Hannah assistant secretary of defense will deliver the address. The graduates are William J Karling Jr Roderick G McDonald and Mrs Margaret R Weston. Karling will receive the BS in forestry McDonald the BS in mining engineering Weston the BS in mathematics.
Regents-Alumni scholarships at the University of Michigan were awarded to 488 graduating Michigan seniors from 309 high schools. Winners were chosen from 1248 applicants and notified by mail. Gogebic county recipients include Wakefield Charles Elmer Kuunnen and Ironwood trio Donna Ellis Richard Sale.
The Ironwood Council and Bishop Magner Council Knights of Columbus plan a joint initiation on Sunday May 31 in Wakefield. The day includes 7:00 am Mass at St Marys Church a breakfast at Wakefield Memorial Building 10:00 am first degree 1:00 pm second degree and about 3:00 pm third degree in church parlors a 6:00 pm banquet at the memorial building for candidates members and their ladies. Also notes visiting Mr and Mrs Joseph Popzak of Chicago and Wm A Kuivinen attending events.
Charles Kuivinen plans to enter the University of Michigan College of Engineering in Ann Arbor this fall. In high school he participated in the Senior Class play Prom Committee Conservation Club W Club Echo Staff and was named Uthrotar. He played football basketball track tennis and baseball and earned honorable mention on the all state class C football team plus a berth on the All U P Second Team.
The American Legion sponsors a May 26 concert at Wakefield Memorial Building 8 p m featuring the Ironwood Legion Glee Club and Auxiliary Chorus. Proceeds go to Gogebic Area Memorial Hospital Association with tickets from local outlets and student sales at the high school.
More than 40 residents of the Plymouth Location attended a Monday city council meeting to discuss stopping the John Hanousek Trust plan to move homes. An association was formed with officers elected including Rev. Frank J. Lunn as president and Frank Bertetto as treasurer to handle surface rights and an overall lease. The council postponed assisting residents and supported forming the association to negotiate with Hanousek Trust officials.
James Kilponen, son of Mr and Mrs Carl Kilponen, received the American Legion Award from post commander Domenic Valesano at Wakefield High School Honors Assembly. Sydney E Saari, valedictorian, earned the American Legion Auxiliary Award and the DAR award for scholarship and character during the same assembly in the Wakefield gym.
Postmaster James C. Bedell designates May 24 to May 30 as Rural Mail Box Improvement Week. Patrons should ensure boxes are sturdy painted labeled and accessible to carriers. replace nonstandard boxes and keep approaches neat to prevent injuries and delays. Cooperation is requested.
Cadet Gerald O Perron of Marenisco Michigan a second year cadet at Culver Military Academy earns invitation to the Society of Blue Key scholastic honorary. Perron a Lance Corporal in the Infantry ROTC is cited for scholastic attainment and superior promise. He is the son of Mrs Lona Perron Marenisco.
The Wakefield High School All Honors Assembly met in the gym with Lois Luoma as chair. The band and girls chorus performed as awards were presented for football, basketball, track, baseball, tennis, school boy patrol, forensics, and Echo honors to many named students and coaches.
Wakefield city delivery marks Box Improvement Week from May 24 to 30 urging residents to upgrade mail boxes and house numbers. Postmaster warns service could be discontinued if boxes are unsafe or inaccessible and offers free house numbers from the City Engineers Office.
Hans Malmberg of the American Oil Company spoke to the 5th and 6th grades at McDonald School on Tuesday afternoon. He discussed Arabian customs and showed souvenirs, with many questions answered. He and his family plan to depart Wakefield around June 15 for New York City and then sail to Arabia for about two years.
The 1952 53 season ends with a sensational variety concert at Ironwood High School on Wednesday May 27. Headlining is the Ink Spots with Bill Kenny, plus the Sto vers from musical theatre, Lonely the musical clown and Bumpy and Vernon. Andy Serrahn will announce the 53 54 season, tickets at the Winter Theatre Booth.
