Mining Values Announced by State Tax Board

The state tax board estimates 1943 iron mine values at 60.8 million dollars a drop of 2.6 million from last year with Gogebic and Marquette districts leading. Allied Nations themed Wakefield Junior Prom March

Wakefield high school's Junior Prom features junior class president Ray Beling and senior class president William Ribich escorting Miss Annie Sertich in a grand march through an Allied Nations flag corridor. Poppy Week Drive Aims For Memorial Day Support

Auxiliary to Post No. offers tiny poppy flowers for sale to aid incapacitated ex service men and their families. A citywide sale is planned for next Saturday May 29 with proceeds supporting relief efforts. Mayor Wilson's proclamation appears next week in The News.

Salo Completes Basic Training At Third Training Center

Lily A. Salo daughter of Mr and Mrs Jerome Salo of this city has completed four weeks of basic training at the Third Training Center of the Women’s Army Auxiliary She will receive detailed instruction in preparation for taking over a behind the lines Army job releasing a soldier for combat duty.

Six Kruger Boys Now in Service

The Kruger family of Verona has the largest number of boys serving in the armed forces from the area. Two more have entered the service, namely Raymond, Gerald, Irwin P., Russell, Clarence E., and Donald, bringing the total to six. The Mustapas family of Comet location follows with five sons: Simon, William, Arthur, George, and Ernest.

Nolan Impeached in Michigan Secret Marriage Scandal

Lansing reports Michael E. Nolan was impeached on the last two counts after three were dismissed. The trial featured testimony on secret marriage licenses and pre nup physicals with charges Nolan used special licenses for quick weddings and raised fees from five to fifteen dollars. The Michigan Bar association may pursue disbarment proceedings.

Ashland Music Festival Honors Wartime Entrants

DeRosier to Receive Award for Meritorious Service

Seven Michigan soldiers will be posthumously decorated in a ceremony led by M Krech District Commander. Wilfred DeRosier, father of Edwin C DeRosier who died near Buna New Guinea in 1942, is invited to attend to accept the award for his son. Edwin C DeRosier earned the honor for extraordinary heroism on November 19 1942 aiding wounded, crawling beyond front lines to help. He was killed by enemy machine gun fire on December 2 1942.

Womans Club Closes Year With Dessert Tea

The Womans Club held its annual dessert tea in the Community building on Wednesday afternoon Twelve card tables were in play Mrs A J Moran won first in500 while Mrs Mildred Davies and Mrs Elmer Johnson took bridge prizes A luncheon followed served by Mrs H A Tressel and committee including Mrs Gordon Connor and others The rooms were decorated with spring flowers and the club will resume next fall under new officers.

Short Circuit Ignites Clover Farm Store Blaze

A basement fire at Walters' Clover farm store was started by a short circuit. Firefighters arrived at 6 45 PM Monday amid smoke and ensured no damage beyond the smoke spread. Mr Walters discovered the blaze during a routine check and alerted the department to prevent loss. Also in town a 40 8 meeting will convene at the American Legion rooms next Tuesday May 25 urging full attendance. Alma Ranta travels from Detroit after her father Isaac Ranta was injured prompting her visit.
