89 to Finish High School Next Month in Wakefield

The Wakefield high school graduating class for 1939 includes 89 students 47 girls and 42 boys. Commencement is June 9 at the high school auditorium with Chippewa Falls educator Robert Letendre delivering the address titled The Challenge of Today.

Wakefield Driver Freed Of Negligence In Death In Inquest

An inquest in Ironwood township absolved Frank L. Savinski of negligence after Mikko Alanko 58 was fatally struck on the Lake Superior road north of Ironwood Homesteads. The coroner's jury included Ralph Rowell and other locals. Alanko, born in Finland in 1881, had lived in Gogebic County since 1904.

Wakefield chorus to sing at Ashland festival Sunday

The Wakefield high school chorus will join a 750 voice program from Wakefield to Superior and Rice Lake for a sacred music festival at Dodd gym Ashland under Professor Steen. Northland College band concert follows in the evening at the gymnasium.

Connor Co Reaches Pact With Timber Workers Union

An agreement between the Carpenters' and Painters Union of the AFL and the timber workers federation ends a dispute at Cloeney Le nd Company. Connor Co recognizes the CLO union as bargaining agent for woodsmen and the Federation for its millstone workers. The deal was signed last week and calls for continued operations as conditions permit.

Wakefield Mine Values Reduced by $90,000 Tentatively

The Wakefield mine valuations are tentatively cut by $90,000 from last year’s figures, totaling $7,595,000 this year. The tax assessment will be about $1,350 lower, with Plymouth mine down by $180,000 and Sunday Lake up by $220,000. A hearing on the mine values will be held in Bessemer next Thursday morning with city commission members in attendance.

4-H honors day honors Wakefield members at Roosevelt School

Mary Louise Bonino received an achievement award for outstanding 4-H club work at the annual 4-H honors day held at Roosevelt school. The award was presented by Mrs. Isabel Sleight Elder for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Other Wakefield members recognized include Grace Trudgeon and Ruth, among others.

Timber Workers Charge Firms Importing Labor in Gogebic

County board heard Timber Workers Union accuse Connors Lumber Marathon Paper Mills and Underwood Veneer of importing Wisconsin labor, leaving Gogebic woodsmen on relief. Board referred issue to special committee to press mills for Gogebic workers' preference. Saints Win First Game Of Season

The St. Mary's ball team beat Davis 2 to 1 on Cardinal field. Gorski pitched a strong game with 13 strikeouts and 18 batters faced, while Ylisto allowed two runs as Saint batters rallied late. Kujula drove in Elliott for the winning run with a two base hit in the ninth. The Saints travel to Marenisco next Sunday for the second game.

Wakefield township school district election registration days

Votes will be held July 10 after registration on June 6 and June 12 for the Wakefield township school district annual meeting of the electors. Incumbents R B Wortley and William Oscar Mackee face successor elections as neither has stated intent to seek re election.

State to divert game funds to cover deficit, 1940 warning

Ben East reports in the Grand Rapids Press that Michigan confronts possible legal and fiscal shifts as the Ways and Means Committee proposes to impound over 31 million dollars from hunting and fishing license revenues. The plan would finance nonconservation state needs, contradicting the law tying funds to game and fish programs and risking the Pittsman Robinson act revenues. Haskins Named President of Wakefield Recreation Council

Clare J. Haskins was named chair man of the Wakefield Recreation Council at a meeting of representatives of the various clubs. W. H. Roberts was chosen secretary. The new council will coordinate recreational activities and provide facilities and encouragement for a complete program for all ages with support pledged by Rudy Bolich, county WPA recreation director.

City considers mixer purchase in 1939 40 budget

At Wednesday afternoon meeting the council weighed buying a concrete mixer versus renting. Rental costs on a cubic yard basis were shown to potentially exceed the price of a new mixer over a season. Bills presented totaled 35 dollars from Charles Lampi and 146.53 dollars from W P Lukkarinen, the latter covering rework on highway shoulders.
