The Wakefield Co op Association held a meeting at the Temperance venue with a director and the educational committee. They explained how the co op will work with government price control delivery and credit rules. Those absent will be notified by mail. The association asks customers to cooperate. Lunch was served to attendees.
A USO rally will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Wakefield Community building for Wakefield and range residents. Louis A. Keary of Hancock will be principal speaker, with Art Devine of Gogebic county USO chairing. The Wakefield municipal band will perform, and Miss Phyllis Quaranta will sing.
Paint-Teachers associations and civic groups petition the Gogebic County Board to establish a county health unit. The plan would cost about 21000 yearly with 7000 state aid and 14000 local, creating a health office headed by a 4000 salary doctor, a 1800 sanitary engineer, two 1800 nurses and a 900 clerk. Nels Kuivinen says newspapers will carry case histories of tire mileage and car efficiency, with 1816 papers in 13 Midwest states. Highlights include a tire set with 45 104 miles and a 1938 car at 103 555 miles, plus a Tire-Life Estimator Chart and gas and oil tips. Radio broadcasts begin April 27 awarding war bonds to farmers and featuring farm news by Everett Mitchell six days a week for thirteen weeks across 90 stations.
More than 100 couples attended Wakefield High School junior prom last Friday in the school gym. War restrictions limited lavish decors but a South American motif with cactus and trees created an ideal setting. The grand march was the highlight of the evening.
The Wakefield high school band led the Ashland festival with the most first ratings from the Wisconsin Music Association. The band earned first in sight reading and high marks across conducting, technique, and overall effect, plus a top score in the band concert. Individual members won seven firsts in instruments. four Wakefield ensembles also earned first ratings. Judges included E C Moore and Karl Grill among others.
Miss Mary Bugni daughter of Mr and Mrs John Ferratto married Frank Menghini son of Mr and Mrs Louis Menghini in a 9 oclock ceremony at St Marys Catholic church Rev Thomas Drengacz officiated. The couple planned a wedding trip after a breakfast and reception at the Wico club house with about 50 guests.
Michigan grand officers will institute a new chapter in Wakefield at the Masonic hall on Saturday evening June 20. Worthy grand matron Margaret Jones and worthy grand patron Robert Smith headline the officers. Eligible prospective charter members must obtain demits and join at the chapter's first June meeting.
