The legislature faces a tense adjournment battle with the senate pushing May 14 as the deadline. Taxation, appropriation bills must be approved first. Murphy backs broad fiscal reform while Smith targets state economy and payroll cuts.
The St John Ladies Club will hold a bazaar hosted by Rev N Korhonen, pastor, at the church. Proceeds support church programs and community outreach.
Mrs Margaret Gardetto died in Verona on a Wednesday after a personal crisis. Born in Buscan in 1909, she moved to Verona in 1910 and made it her home. She is survived by two or three sons and daughters, including Mrs Julia Say of Chicago.
Rev. Axel G. Pearson of Moline will address Ironwood Rotarians at a Saturday morning session during the Tenth District conference. The Wakefield high school band will provide music, and Pearson, once Ironwood Methodist pastor, is noted as a leading Rotarian with humorous, wholesome talks.
News notes announce Short News About Town has been awarded a contract from the Soo Line and Northwestern. H McNamara reports activities this season and local comments touch on schools, salaries, and the Wakefield high school event. The athletic meet starts at 2:00 PM this afternoon at the field.
The state liquor control commission issued five liquor dealer licenses in Wakefield, matching last year, to Lake View Inn James Mezzano John Piccldi Mose Giansante and Alex Harry. Dealer licenses cost 500 each and seven tavern licenses at 100 per year allow sale of beer and light wines only.
Nine building permits issued this week raise total to 11 in two weeks. Projects include three new dwellings and extensive remodeling. Eric Hellstein seeks water and power extensions and a dwelling. David Bellmore plans a bungalow on Pierce Ashland lot. Charles Best seeks a dwelling in the Onella addition on east Pierce. Mrs. Lepisto contracts a five room dwelling on east Pierce. Bedell remakes parts of Lake View Inn and similar repairs at Genes’ Hiver. Garages and minor repairs noted. front work on the ulh building underway, to be finished in two weeks.
Ottawa National Forest unveils at least three free public camp grounds for summer use. Supervisor Clare Hendee notes rising visitation and plans to extend recreation near Watersmeet and Kenton. Roadside beautification includes planting 118000 seedling trees this spring for future aesthetic and economic gains.
Aerial mosaics from 11 000 to 12 000 foot photos will finish late May for the western 12 townships of Ontonagon and all Gogebic county. Michigan aerial photos with Isle Royale view in state geologist files will be mosaicked and completed. Maps will be offered at nominal fees to cover costs. Scale two inches to the mile.
Sunday school at 9 30 a m and divine worship at 11 a m. The Men's Club meets Thursday evening instead of Tuesday. A prelim service Friday evening will be conducted. Pastor BYQUIST leads the church activities.
WICO Plymouth Presbyterian schedules church services with worship at 9 30 a m and 10 30 a m. Mrs Harries is set to speak or lead conduct at the event.
City commission meeting discusses wage increases for police and fire departments with a 3 2 vote approving raises. Mayor Cloon proposes using surplus funds for summer WPA programs while Trebilcock urges concrete paving and tourism projects. Nuisance complaints from Dr L G Wilson and Einer Wahlberg are referred to mediation involving Peter Delmet and health officials.
Lansing school leaders Supt Leonard Mniece and business manager J A Jackson visited to push approval for expanded state education funding. The legislature weighs an increase from 38 million to 47 million dollars for the coming year, to be raised by sales tax liquor sales and the state primary fund.
Twenty seven thousand acres of state land in Michigan will be opened to oil development. A state oil and gas lease sale will be held in Lansing on May for six north central counties. Acreage includes Clare 40 acres Gladwin 440 Iosco 720 Midland 680 Ogeman acres Roscommon 500.
Union Church will combine morning and Sunday school for a special Mothers Day observance. Music by Miss Knifke and others will begin around 9:30 o clock during the service at the Union church.
