Wakefield Names Clean-Up Week and Tourist Boost Plan

The Wakefield City Commission proclaims May 10 to 15 as Clean-Up Time with paint and repair drives. A tourist booth is planned to promote Wakefield area sites and activities. Mr. Celeste Beber and others travel to Milwaukee for a two week stay.

Funeral Rites Held For Three Old Settlers

Funeral services were held for Matt Korpi 61 of Wakefield and Alex Harry 61 a Wakefield businessman. Both were honored by local American Legion and Methodist church clergy with interment at Lakeside cemetery. Also noted is the death of Elisha Bullen 73 a Wakefield resident with services at the Wakefield Methodist church and interment at Lakeside cemetery.

Wakefield Band Patrons Club Meeting Announces Finale

The Wakefield Band Patrons club will meet May 18 in the Music room. All members are urged to attend as this will be the final meeting until activities resume next fall with public schools. A final report on the University of Michigan band concert will be given. The Wakefield audience on the spring tour was the largest yet through the Upper Peninsula.

Wakefield Township School Census Set To Begin

The 1948 Wakefield township school census will be conducted by enumerators Mrs. Andrew Luoma and Mrs. John Williams during the last twenty days of May. The canvass collects names birth dates places of birth and related data of all district residents under twenty as of May 31 1948 including those away at school or serving in the armed forces. The census influences Primary and State Aid funds and serves as a source of identity data for legal papers, making accurate listings crucial.

Officers were elected and installed at a Geroux Post No 11 meeting. Executive committee members for one year are John W. Thomas John Novak William Kuivinen Axel Jacobson and James Mezzano. Clarence Jacobson conducted the installation ceremonies.

Commission Acts on Electricity Rates and Nominates Charter Commissioner

The Lansing city commission objected to an electric storage water heating rate increase and authorized the City Clerk to file the objection with the Michigan Public Service Commission. Nomination petitions for City Charter Commissioner were presented for Howard L. Anderson, Francis W. Douffiz, John Gilbert, and Clarence A. Jacobson. Calls for port covering hearings on April 24, 16, 21, 24, 26, and 28 were received and filed.
