Wakefield Election Set for Three City Council Seats

Voters go to polls on April 5 to elect three council members with two serving on the Board of Supervisors for two years and one on the council for one year. Three Candidates Vie for City Council Seats in April Election

On Monday April 5 the city holds its regular election to fill expiring council seats. George Westlund Joseph Patyk and Stanley Tyack seek two two year terms joining the county board while the third serves a one year council term. Patyk Lake and Westlund list as candidates with Patyk already serving as councilman and on the county board. George Westlund has sat on the council since 1949 and Andy Lake has prior service on the city commission and board of supervisors. A low voter turnout clouds the contest but officials urge participation and note plans for an extensive program this year.

James Sheridan to Speak at Wakefield Rotary Meeting

James E. Sheridan, principal of Ironwood schools, will be the Wakefield Rotary Club speaker on March 29 in the Memorial Building. Program chairman is Leonard Harris with A. J. Tiberi in charge. Sheridan, a Saugatuck native and Albion College and University of Michigan alum, will discuss athletic eligibility and control in Michigan schools.

Down Town Home Extension Club Meeting Review

The Down Town Home Extension Club met at Mrs. Wm. Kumn’s home for a regular business session and program planning. Gogebic County Agent Floyd Hicks reported 24 extension clubs and 340 active members. county enrollment was the state’s highest in 1953 with 728 members and 1,253 projects. Lunch followed hosted by Mrs. William Kuivinen.

U. P. Champions Honored Tuesday With Parade and Assembly

Wakefield honored the U P basketball champions with a Tuesday parade and gym program. The celebration included a police escort color guard band and students, speeches by officials led by John W. Thomas, and messages from Governor Williams and State Rep Mezzano. Team members were introduced by coach Roman Yatchak with songs and band selections to follow.

Wakefield Square Dance Club Schedules Saturday Meet at Wakefield High

Freshman Nursing Class to Receive Caps at Thorne Hall Ceremony

Miss Joanne Lane and 40 other students will join 41 new nursing graduates as Passavant Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University hold cap ceremonies completing six months of probation. Dr Arthur Colwell will address the group at Thorne Hall on March 28 at 3:00 PM.

Mrs Artwich Hospitalized After Stroke at Lakeview Inn

Mrs William Artwich formerly Marian Bordano was hospitalized after a stroke suffered while working at the Lakeview Inn Restaurant. Her condition has not improved and a full report may take a day or so.

Services Held Wednesday For Sgt Perry Critchell

Funeral services for Sgt. Perry Critchell 43 commander of the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post were held at Rockford Michigan. Critchell died in an automobile crash near Grayling related to a basketball tournament trip. Sheriff Frank Perlich suffered serious injuries.

Work Starts on 3.8 Mile Gogebic County Highway Project

State highway work begun in Wakefield and Bessemer, Gogebic County. Bacco Construction of Iron Mountain is contractor for 582206 dollars 74 cents. 2.14 miles on M-28 Wakefield and 1.7 miles on US-2 Bessemer. Completion set for November 15 1954 pending weather for Bessemer route.

Robert Novak Receives Navy Honorable Discharge

Robert Novak son of Mr and Mrs Benedict Novak Sr received an honorable discharge from the Navy on March 4 at Quonset Point He visited relatives in Detroit and Whitewater Wisconsin on the way home He served a year after graduating in 1949 and was recalled in 1952 While with Whitewater Teachers College he served in the Mediterranean aboard the Bennington Sixth Fleet He plans to re enter White College this year
