Local residents note a late winter with March bringing new cold snaps while Easter bonnets loom. Tax assessment disputes and county cash needs remain unsettled after a state check found Ironwood, Bessemer, and Wakefield with mixed valuations. Mr and Mrs Warren Sibley celebrate 57th anniversary amid illness and home life reflections.
Wakefield P T A holds its regular meeting in the high school music auditorium at 7 30 pm Monday. The program includes the film The Open Book and a safety talk by Oscar Marander district safety inspector for Pickands Mather Company. Peggy Valesano performs two accordion numbers Beautiful Days and When Irish Eyes Are Smiling. Lunch follows. many volunteers assist with planning and serving.
Marcia Finco celebrated her tenth birthday Sunday afternoon at her parents' home 507 River Street. Fourteen guests attended after a movie and games, square dancing and lunch featuring a large pink decorated cake. Guests included Eleanor Ferrando Carol Harvey Jackie Kilway Marilyn King Charlotte Hanganen Jannette Budgick Colleen Burns Kathryn Ringsmuth Marigene Maki Carol Martinson Susan Dahl Barbara Zielinski and Marcia's sister.
City reports cover public works water electric and police activity for February 1954. Snow removals and plowing duties listed. metro water and electric repairs described. police issued licenses made arrests and handled traffic directions. fire department responded to several chimney fires and held a training film night. Also notes a story hour at the public library.
Wakefield's district champion basketball team was feted by the Wakefield Rotary Club after upsetting Ontonagon. Coaches Roman Yatchak and Vern Carr praised the squad's spirit as players and staff were introduced. The event featured coin collecting display, music by Mike Rydeski, and attendance by guests and team members.
The Thomaston Home Demonstration Club will hold a special meeting Monday at 7 p m in Thomaston Town Hall to work on the aluminum project. Members should bring adhesive taped pliers scissors brown paper 14 inches square and a pencil. The regular meeting is set for Wednesday March 17.
Mrs Bernard Skud and son Timothy will visit from Washington for several months with her parents, Mr and Mrs F W Duffin. Mr Skud will join in June from Alaska where he is doing research with the Fishing Wildlife Group. The Nifty Needlers met at Margaret Johnson’s home. Gingerbread was served. Next meeting at Diane King’s on March 165. William Roberge and family visited Duluth. Louis Remondino returned from Detroit after a month with their sons and wives. William Mezzano left for Connecticut on business and pleasure. Eugene Kuiawa of Rhinelander visited his parents. Rita Bracket visited her parents. Rev Francis Krusty held services at Marygrove replacing Rev Roland Bassett in Wakefield. William Kuivinen and Linea Cudahy went to Detroit for Miss Nancy Jean’s wedding. Lt Col M L Ash and wife of Yokohama Japan welcomed a daughter born Feb 12 at Yokohama Hospital Mae Karling was his former name. Mrs Bernard Morrison went to Stockton to visit Jerome Schroeder whose wife Bernice Morrison is the former. Celeste Beber senior, with 17 grandchildren, observes his 70th birthday on March 13. he enjoys cards and summer plans.
Carl E. Nelson conducts the Gogebic Range Symphonette in a Sunday concert at 3:00 PM in the Ironwood Memorial Building auditorium. Program includes Rosamunde Overture Schubert Valse Blond Drigo May Day Dance and more with Vernon Rector piano. Tickets from Nelson or at the door. Lee Wilson appointed city police patrolman on recommendation of civil service, plus others on eligible list. Miss Shirley Riipi wed Leslie Pensala in Wakefield.
Wakefield Board of Education approved re employment contracts for 1954-55 for a list of faculty contingent on certification requirements and contract return by April 5 1954. Salaries follow the revised 1954-55 schedule. A 154 student interest list for a Wakefield roller skating rink was noted and officials from local counties announced an April 3 event. The board commended the Wakefield Cardinal basketball team and coach for winning the District Class C Championship at Bessemer.
Kenneth C Kilponen of 303 Bedell Avenue has attained cadet staff sergeant in Air Force ROTC at Michigan Tech. A chemical engineering junior, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Carl T Kilponen and a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
Elver Wahlberg performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Massey Hall on March 23 under guest conductor Leopold Stokowski. The program featured Moussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, Morel Antiphonie, Delvincourt Pamir in four movements, and Vaughan Williams Suite on English Folk Songs, ending with a vigorous workout for the ensemble.
