Michigan liquor control reforms long overdue and needed

Library seeks added room for extension

City commission weighs adding reading space at the Community building library to house an expanded reading room with a 600 to 700 dollar cost. A. L. Dave Gagnon 83 Succumbs After Brief Illness

Dave Gagnon 83 of Wakefield died Monday afternoon at the Infirmary hospital after a two week stay. Born in Quebec on November 8, 1860 he lived alone near the old Morgan mine and was known for entertaining locals with lunches and stories in his French Canadian dialect. He formerly cooked for a prospecting crew at Morgan mine. Funeral services were held Thursday at St Marys Catholic Church with burial in Lakeview Cemetery.

Mr and Mrs James Bedell longtime city residents quietly observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary on Saturday Friends called throughout the day to pay respects no formal observance was held They were married in Cincinnati Ohio in March 1873 Both remain active though winter brought poor health

Arthur Stoughton, recently discharged from the army after service in Oregon, plans to return to the city around March 29 to resume duties as boys' counselor in the local school system.

Two Wakefield Women Join WAAC Training Unit

Violet Maki daughter of Ves ter Maki from Castile and Ellen Hall formerly Ellen Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Axel Johnson of Pierce Street began training at the First WAAC training center at Fort Des Moines Iowa. They were placed in a receiving center company for a week of elementary training then to a basic company for four weeks to learn duties to replace a man in a non combat army job.

Large Group to Leave for Army and Navy Training

Twenty four young men will depart Monday for Fort Sheridan Illinois induction center after passing their physical at Marquette. Another five leave Sunday for Marquette en route to Great Lakes Naval Training Station after selecting service upon last Monday's exams. The group includes Eddie Raisanen in charge and 23 others heading to Army. five to Navy include Adolph Bugni Willard Hallberg Raymond Sibley Joseph Beber and William Pikka.

Hemispheric Crusade of Prayer Opens at Church

Rev Fr Drengacz of St Marys Church announces a Hemispheric Crusade of Prayer to save lives and souls amid wartime slaughter. The novena, held Fridays at 7 pm since April 26 1940, runs one hour weekly for 43 weeks through December 31 1943, with a national push to enroll over a half million adherents.

Fulton Lewis Jr. Heads to Ironwood for April Talk

Fulton Lewis Jr. one of the nation’s top Mutual system commentators will appear in Ironwood on April 12 under Ironwood Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsorship. Coop Store Reports At Annual Meet

Wakefield Co-operative association held its annual meeting at Temperance hall on Wednesday March 10. The store’s total sales reached 73137.21 with net earnings of 3103.56 to be divided as 3 percent on shares and patronage refunds totaling 3069.93 as 5 percent trade rebate. Officers were elected and future work outlined. Lunch was served.

War Labor Board orders wage rise of five and a half cents an hour for 13 iron ore mines in Gogebic county affecting about 2,000 workers with retroactive back pay potentially amounting to $160,000 and grants union maintenance and dues checkoff amid ongoing negotiations.
