Rotary Clubs Plan Marquette Conference in May

The Tenth District Rotary conference will be held in Marquette on Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20. The event brings together clubs from northern Michigan and Wisconsin, with about 42 clubs and 1,600 members in the district. Marquette Rotary, a pioneer club, has produced governors and is home to two past district leaders. The district governor this year is Raymond Empson of Gladstone.

Mother of Mrs J J Novak Passes Away

Mrs. Ann C. Johnson widow of the late Peter Johnson died at Mill Street Negaunee after a monthlong illness. Born in Sweden on September 12 1862 she moved to Negaunee about 40 years ago and joined Linnea lodge. Survived by eight children including Charles Harold Gust Peter Edna Jennie and Mrs J B Bertucci and Mrs J J Novak. Also a sister Mrs Louise Held and brothers in Montana and Sweden. J J Novak left for Negaunee county to attend the funeral.

Measles Cases Reported as City Health Warns

The city health officer reports about 60 measles cases since February 1 with 14 in March. One smallpox case is recovering and likely to be released from quarantine next week. Authorities urge vaccination with free vaccine available for all residents and request reporting of any cold or fever in children.

Randt Wins in Wakefield and Marenisco Townships

Fred K. Brandt was nominated for supervisor on the Farmers ticket in Wakefield township while William J. Weston failed to win the Farmers nomination yet gained the Citizens ticket nomination by write-ins. In Marenisco township William P. Toomey defeated Lyle Murdoch for supervisor, with other nominations including George Mall for clerk and Victor Kruutari for highways. Results list vote tallies for numerous local offices and note that candidates with at least ten Citizen ticket votes will appear on the April 7 election ballot.

W Frank James Nears Return After Health Crisis

Friends of Representative W Frank James report a recurrence of his old ailment but say he is believed out of danger. An attendant stays with him nightly from 7 p m to 7 a m and visitors are restricted to family as he improves. If trends continue he may return to his office in early April.

A handbag found at Fat's Place contains an old jumper two gallon jugs two wine glasses and empty items. The bag smells of alcohol and has a long leather strap for shoulder carry. The owner, who appeared intoxicated, left the bay this week. William Woodward deputy sheriff seeks information.
