Lake Superior ore shipments drop 93 percent in May
Iron ore movement in May fell 93.74 percent from May 1931 in the Lake Superior district. May shipments totaled 110,826 tons, versus 1,769,295 tons a year earlier. Most cargoes went to Lake Michigan ports, while 883 ore cars moved from Lake Erie ports to interior blast furnaces, down from 13,017 cars in May last year.

Steel output falls to new low amid demand slowdown
The Iron Age reports steel capacity at about 20 percent of ingot capacity, down from 23 percent last week, due to booking declines and tax bill uncertainty. Pig iron daily output drops to 25 276 gross tons, the lowest since August 1897, while daily steel ingot output nears 1921 lows. Structural steel shows some building demand, with weekly totals at 43 tons, the best since last October. auto sector demand narrows except Ford, though tin plate rollings improve to about half capacity.
