Michigan Students Among Yale 264th Commencement Candidates
Thirty three Michigan students are among 2350 candidates for degrees at Yale University’s 264th Commencement set for next Monday June 14 at 10 30 am. Candidates hail from 4 states the District of Columbia Puerto Rico and 52 foreign countries. Outdoor ceremony on Old Campus expects 15000 spectators. Among graduates is Paul David Hanson son of Mr and Mrs Victor Hanson 1011 Pierce Street earning a Bachelor of Divinity.

Mrs. Orrin Smith was the guest of honor at a farewell party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Randall in Plymouth last Wednesday evening. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Bertetto, Mrs. Niemi, and Mrs. Swanson after cards. Lunch was served by the hostesses, and Mrs. Smith received wall plaques as a gift from the group. The Smith family left Friday for Wayland where they will live as Mr. Smith, a trooper with the Michigan State Police, has been transferred.

The Wakefield Police Department sponsors the technicolor film Horse Soldiers starring John Wayne at Wakefield Theater on Tuesday June 2 to raise funds for the Patrol Boys trip to the Upper Peninsula State Fair in Escanaba. Regular American Legion Geroux Post No 11 meeting at Pierce and River will elect officers and the Executive Board for next year. Topics include the July 4 celebration and the Upper Peninsula Legion Convention in Hancock this month.

Funeral Service Held For Toivo M Pikka 58
Toivo Matten Pikka 58 of Wakefield died at home after a short illness. Born April 9 1907 he lived in Wakefield all his life. He worked eight years for the Wakefield City water department and earlier as a lawyer with Connor Lumber and Land Co. He married Mary Lucas Kutrovoc on October 30 1936 in Ironwood. Surviving: wife Mary a daughter Marianne four sisters and one brother. A son Robert James died 18 years ago. The service was at First Lutheran Church where Rev Rudolph Kemppainenn officiated burial at Lakeside Cemetery.

Martha Juoppers Appointed City Clerk At Special Meeting
Wakefield City Council met in a special session to address a wage increase and union matters. They approved a $10 across the board raise effective July 1, 1965, instituted job postings for vacancies, and planned a separate union contract. The council amended Charter amendment No 3 and sent it to the Attorney General for ballot approval. They also named Mrs Martha Herbert Juoppert to fill the city clerk vacancy after Miss Margaret Williams resigned.

Marine lieutenant returns from Caribbean deployment with squadron
Marine First Lieutenant Robert G. Schiltz, son of Mrs. Marie Schiltz of 708 Hancock Street, has returned to New River Marine Corps Air Facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina, with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 after a three month Caribbean deployment. The squadron trained at Vieques Puerto Rico Panama Canal and Guantanamo Bay Cuba and visited ports including Kingston Jamaica Barbados British West Indies and San Juan Puerto Rico during off duty hours.

Vote Sought for Wakefield Hot Lunch Program Upgrade
The Wakefield Michigan Wakefield School District seeks a not to exceed 30000 expenditure to buy equipment and remodel lunch quarters for a hot lunch program in 1965 66. Taxpaying electors in Wakefield township will vote at the annual school district election Monday after signing an advisory ballot affirming eligibility. The board cites prior studies and neighboring district experiences and notes estimated costs over 19000 for renovations plus equipment. The district budget for 1965 66 is 424000 with a 24 mill tax rate, and continued modernization is urged to maintain educational advantages while facing recurring operating losses in comparable programs.

The Rev Toivo Miettinen was installed as pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church Wakefield and Messiah Lutheran Marenisco.
