Special Wakefield Board of Education session considered football equipment purchases for next season with bids to be checked for lowest price. Meeting also discussed parking lot grades at the Ice rink and set a May 19 session to review school supplies. adjourned at 3 15 PM.
Meeting opened at 1 50 pm with President R B Wortley and members listed. Quotations for school supplies reviewed. Purchasing Agent ordered to buy on lowest bids. Board discussed buying a 1 1/2 ton 1940 Dodge truck with Wood's body and hydraulic hoist from Vern S Fairfield for 675.00 after deductions. Adjourned at 3 06 pm with signatures.
Rhubarb appears in season with recipes for Rhubarb Punch and Banana-Rhubarb Betty. Rhubarb is cooked with lemon rind and water, then strained and sweetened, combined with fruit juices and carbonated water for a punch. Banana-Rhubarb Betty uses ripe bananas, tender rhubarb, orange zest, brown sugar, bread crumbs, and butter for a dessert.
The six year CCC ECC unit at Camp Gibbs Iron County closed officially Saturday with 116 enrollees transferred to other western peninsula camps. Lieut. Robertus will depart for Fort Brady after completing property checks. protests by Iron River civic groups failed to prevent closure.
Combine bananas rhubarb orange rind sugar salt and water then mix crumbs with melted butter. Layer in a buttered dish with crumb top and bottom, bake at 375 F for 35 to 40 minutes until rhubarb is tender. Rest 5 minutes to brown crumbs and serve hot with whipped cream. Makes six servings.
