Federal and State Gas Tax Separate

The new federal gasoline tax is separate from Michigan’s tax. The federal levy of one cent per gallon is a production tax collected at refinery or port of entry, with importers paying an additional two and a half percent tariff. The state tax, a source tax, is collected when produced in Michigan or when refined product comes to rest in state. A refiner or importer may sell tax-paid product to a licensed wholesale distributor who then collects three cents per gallon tax on retail distribution.
