Four Wakefield Women Hurt in Auto Accident

Four Wakefield women were injured when their car skidded on loose gravel two miles east of Mellon and rolled over an embankment. Drivers and passengers include Mrs John Ozello and Mrs Vivian Swanson along with Mrs M Ozello and Mrs Peter Bracket. Mrs John Yatechak escaped injury. All were taken home after bruises and shock. they were en route to Ashland to visit Mrs Arthur Anderson, patient in a hospital there.

Robbers Loot Ironwood Store Safe Using Nitro Glycerine

Thieves blew open the O'Donnell-Seamens Department store safe at Tronwood on Sunday, taking about 3000 dollars in cash and checks. Entry was through the front door with a visible lock removal, using nitro glycerine to blast the safe, with bags and cloaks used to haul away the loot. The crime appeared to be the work of experts. one witness reported seeing two well dressed men with grips near the store earlier. Loss is covered by burglary insurance.

John R Matthews and daughters return from Eugene Oregon to Wakefield for an indefinite stay. Charles Bolo and Oscar Benson travel to Waukesha Wisconsin for medical exams at the government hospital. both are veterans authorized by the local Legion post through Congressman James.

Finnish Pastor Named to Preach Here Soon

The Rev. Niilo Korhonen, pastor of the Finnish Lutheran congregation at Fort Bragg California, has accepted the call as pastor of the local Finnish Lutheran church. He will occupy the pulpit for the first time in October and comes with a background in missionary work and several pastorates. He succeeds the Rev. Alpo Setula, who left Wakefield about a year ago.

Baseball Team to Meet Bessemer Here Sunday

Wakefield seeks revenge after last Sunday's loss to Montreal as it hosts Bessemer at the local park Sunday. Antilla, now with Bessemer, catches. Erickson starts for Bessemer, while Buonavaaro will pitch for Wakefield and Forget catches. Wakefield uses its same lineup as last Sunday, aiming to improve infield gaps after recent practices.

Wakefield Schools Budget Plans for Next Year

Wakefield and Wakefield township schools project about 230000 needed for next year with 205000 raised by district property tax and the remainder from the states primary school fund. Salaries 104600, bond retirement 26000, bond interest 87000, capital outlay 89000, plant operation 26000, with 125000 remaining unpaid after planned bond retirements. Authority granted to borrow up to 130000 to cover next year’s activities. A new school district insurance form will consolidate all property and equipment under one policy.

Wakefield Township Property Reassessment Sparks Protest

Wakefield township may re assess taxable property after Bonifas Lumber protested valuations to the state tax commission. No date for the reassessment is set. Supervisor Hamlin, the assessing officer, previously raised township values based on timber land sales and offered reductions for farm lands to spur development. A rehearing could trigger reviews of other townships. Mr and Mrs J A James visit relatives in Marquette Ishpeming. School District Property Valuation and Insurance Plans

The district values school property at 726584.19 and furniture at 53544.86, totaling 780000. Insurance is set at 478000 for buildings and 43000 for equipment, to be placed with local agents soon. Current policies will be canceled when the new policy takes effect.
