Wakefield reports a June 30 cash balance of 3,023.37 with no unpaid bills. June receipts totaled 19,254.71 led by electric sales and water revenue. taxes unpaid stood at 110,883.15 as of July 24. a 2 percent penalty rises after July 31 with further penalties after August.

Early Wakefield church organized amid mining camp life

In 1887 Wakefield began as a rough mining camp. Rev. William Daniel Stevens arrived in 1888 to organize a church. Officers and members formed after thirteen people answered his invitation, despite language barriers and transience among workers.

Virginia Minn Man Dies in Car Crash

Hugo Palo aged 63 died early Saturday at Divine Infant Hospital after a July 19 crash on M-28 near the Shell Service gas station. He was alone when his car left the highway, struck a culvert, and suffered multiple injuries. He is survived by his wife and daughter. The body was moved to Virginia for burial. Alvin Lewis, 55, Hurley, was killed March 12 in a collision with a logging truck on US-2 west of Wakefield.

Injured 50 year old in gravel pit accident near Thomaston

Leonard Pikka of 2004 Pierce Street is treated at Divine Infant Hospital after being struck by a power shovel while working on a gravel crusher hopper at a pit north of Thomaston. He, a Gogebic County Road Commission truck driver, suffered rib fractures and abdominal and pelvic contusions. condition described as satisfactory by the attending physician.

Marie Kiernan Dies After Long Local Service

Miss Marie Kiernan former resident died Tuesday morning at Green Bay Hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 Friday in Green Bay. She served 12 years as a tuberculosis case worker in Gogebic County before resigning last September, and had previously worked in Iron County Wisconsin.

Koronski Named CD Director for Gogebic County

George W. Koronski, retired county highway engineer manager, was approved as director of the Gogebic County Civil Defense unit. The new post pays 100 dollars monthly and follows a recommendation by the civil defense committee at a July 9 meeting with state and federal civil defense representatives.

The Wakefield public library will reopen Monday with regular hours. Mrs. Margaret Taylor, librarian, said English services will be at 9 a.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church and Finnish services at 10:30 with Rev. S. V. Autere as preacher at both services.

Field Lighting Referendum Fails To Clear Election Path

The school board failed to move a special election on lighting the high school athletic field. The vote 4 to 1 referred the tax picture to the attorney and awaited taxpayer initiative. The meeting announced new board members and officer appointments.

Mrs John Hill marked her 90th birthday on July 23 in Wakefield quietly with family and neighbors for coffee. An early resident since 1889 she and her late husband helped build local business and she remains active in First Lutheran church and local devotionals.

Ore Shipments Rise in Gogebic and Lake Superior Areas

June Gogebic range ore shipments reached 656 299 tons up 88 20 tons from a year earlier. By July 1 shipments totaled 1 203 492 tons, about 299 000 tons more than last year. Lake Superior district mines have mined 29 121 000 tons to July 1 versus near 30 million a year ago. Canadian mines show about 100 000 tons more up to July 1 this year than in 1956.
