Wakefield Council Denies Sunday Lake Contamination Rumor

The Wakefield City Council met July 17 with most members present to address routine matters. They stated rumors of water contamination at Sunday Lake are unfounded as the health officer’s June report shows water safe for swimming. if contamination occurs it will be publicly released. The meeting approved prior minutes and bills totaling 5675.06, reviewed multiple monthly reports, and authorized a road contract with the Michigan State Highway Department.

Kenneth A. Polish born John Jastrzebski dies at 91

John Jastrzebski 91 died Sunday noon at his son’s home in Hurley. Born December 14 1869 in Poland he came to the United States in 1900 and later settled on farms in Ludington and Wakefield. He ran a produce business in 1921 1935 retired in 1935 and lived in Hurley seven years. Funeral services were at St Mary Catholic Church Hurley with burial there. Mr and Mrs Marvin Tyler of St Petersburg Florida and Mr and Mrs John Spinsky of Racine visited Wico.

Roberge Celebrate Golden Anniversary With Open House

Mr and Mrs William Roberge of 813 Hancock Street celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house last Saturday July 15 from 3 to 8 pm. They were married in 1911 in Iron Mountain Michigan and moved to Wakefield in 1917. They have one daughter Verna Gagne of Duluth and grandchildren Kathy and Bruce Gagne of Duluth. He worked as a switchman for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad until retirement eight years ago. A long list of out of town guests attended from Ishpeming Chisholm Iron Mountain Ironwood Duluth and other cities.

Wakefield Public Library Closed for July Vacation

The Wakefield Public Library will close from Monday July 24 through Sunday July 30 for vacation. Librarian Margaret Taylor announced the shutdown and said the library will reopen Monday July 31.

Wakefield High School marks 50th Golden Anniversary

Two graduates from the class of 1912 attended Wakefield High School’s 50th Golden Anniversary on July 14. The oldest alumni led the parade and were featured in the Golden Anniversary program. The class included seven graduates. three are deceased, and two remaining members could not attend.
