Promotions Made Among P-M Co. Gogebic Range Staff

The Pickands Mather Co. announced a series of promotions at the Gogebic range following W. A. Knoll’s retirement as general superintendent. C. D. Bailey promotes to general role. Bailey’s aide Fred Werther joins, with John Vangaard, Bernard Carey, Rod Tregembo, Arden Swanson, Ed Ziolkowski, and Bob Smith receiving shifts in mine leadership and engineering. Knoll’s 43-year career is summarized, noting his service from trainee to general superintendent and his Ironwood residence.

Jesuit priests followed fur traders to Chequamegon Bay to convert the Chippewas and other tribes. Father Claude Allouez began a mission in 1665 but left after two years. Pere Rene Menard preached near Keweenaw Bay in 1660 and died en route to a Huron village. Pere Jacques Marquette arrived in 1669 and died returning from Illinois.

Local couples and visitors fill Wakefield over the holiday

Numerous families from Jackson Michigan Indianapolis Milwaukee and Chicago visit Wakefield and area relatives over the Fourth of July weekend. Many travelers plan trips to Detroit Kalamazoo Rockford and Madison while new marriages and births are noted among local residents. Public and private visits showcase extended families and hometown ties.

Strawberry Festival On Lawn Of Masonic Building

A strawberry festival sponsored by the O E S will be held on the lawn of the Masonic Building next Tuesday July 16 from 3 PM to 8 PM. Mr and Mrs Edward Bertram of Escanaba Michigan visited with their children and Mrs Bertram's parents over the weekend. The Bertram children are spending the summer with their grandparents Mr and Mrs Peter Salo.

Robert A Burns to Be Installed as Chamber President

Robert A Burns will be installed as chamber of commerce president at a Saturday evening dinner at 6 30 in the Legion club. Outgoing president Walter Nunnmaker will turn over leadership as he reviews the past year and Burns outlines his program for the coming year. Members are asked to notify Nunnmaker before Saturday for reservations.

Funeral Services Held For Andres Sanchez 69

Andres Sanchez 69 retired miner died Sunday after three weeks in Divine Infant Hospital. Born August 28 1887 in La Coruna Spain he came to the United States in 1913 and lived in Jerome Ironwood Wakefield. Survived by wife Concepcion Perez two daughters three sons and siblings. Funeral at Immaculate Conception Church with burial Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named.

Tikkala Among Winners In Home Improvement Contest

Arne H. Tikkala of Rochelle Illinois was among Illinois qualifying winners in the 1956 Better Homes and Gardens Home Improvement contest. The event crowned division and class winners across exteriors interiors additions and kitchen areas with cash prizes totaling to 100 and 500 dollars. Final winners included Robert C. Gunther Galesburg R A Walker Ojai California and Walter Lecat Wilmette Illinois. Immaculate Conception Church confessions and masses announced for July 13 14 with daily 7:30 mass.

Social Security Payments Rise in Gogebic County 1956

Rex A. C. Atwood of the Social Security Administration notes 2,429 residents in Gogebic County received $131,736 in December 1956. The year saw 1,372 retired workers plus dependents, 324 children paid $12,602 monthly, and 88 widowed mothers collecting $4,411 monthly. The increase is partly due to lowering the qualifying age for women to 62.

Church Picnic at Tressel Park This Sunday

A church picnic is set for Sunday at Tressel Park with Finnish devotions at 10 then English at 10 30. Dinner and coffee will be served at noon and all afternoon. Public invited. Also notes a Summer Schedule for July 14 with Orthros at 8 and Divine Liturgy at 9.

Gilbert Wasielewski Named To Wakefield School Board

James Gilbert and Theodore Wasielewski were each elected to the Wakefield township school district board with 857 votes each, defeating Arnie Maki who had 475. A total of 1,373 ballots were cast with 21 spoiled. 236 absentee ballots counted. Voters approved giving the board authority to lease the ice rink building by 960 to 247 with 94 spoiled. The new board serves three years. first meeting within two weeks to elect officers. Other members: Eli Mustapaa, Charlie Valesano, Mrs Isaac Saari. Mrs Anton Olson did not seek re election. The retirement of custodian Mrs Hilma Ahola was accepted.
