Wakefield Chronicle Snowbound Weekend Reflections in Wakefield

Snowbound days fill streets with heavy drifts and warned travel. Hyacinths bloom indoors while a photo friendly landscape contrasts with wintry outdoors, as Wakefield residents hear a history talk by John Haglund detailing the town’s iron ore era, growth and key figures from 1887 to 1920s.

Cheese topic dominates senior citizens dinner program

About 40 diners attended the Wednesday senior citizens dinner where dietitian Mrs. Spearing distributed pamphlets on Cheese highlighting types, recipes, and cheese’s protein benefits. The audience learned of ceramic and art classes, extended cookbook contest deadlines, and upcoming films Solo and Nanook of the North.

Mardi Gras 4S Set for February in Marenisco

The Sixth Annual Mardi Gras of the North takes place Saturday February 15 in Marenisco with a 1 pm parade. Prizes for best entries, clown, snowmobile club travel, decorated business, and snow sculptures. Ball 9 pm to 1 am with the Galaxies. Catholic Altar Society dinners 3 to 6 pm in town hall basement. Wakefield High’s Maureen Zielinski Wins Betty Crocker Search

Maureen A Zielinski has been named Wakefield High School 1974 75 Betty Crocker Family Leader of Tomorrow. She won by seniors in the Dec 3 written knowledge and attitude exam and is eligible for state and national honors. The award from General Mills includes a 1500 scholarship for the state winner, a 500 second place grant, and a 20 volume Britannica reference set for her school. Maureen is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Tony Zielinski.

Latva Graduates From Western Michigan University

Darrel Latva of Kalamazoo recently earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Western Michigan University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Latva, longtime Wakefield residents, with grandmother Mrs. Rachel Vikanen of Lahti Street, Wakefield. Immanuel Lutheran Church Holds Its Annual Meeting

The annual meeting at Immanuel Lutheran Church presided by Rev. David Spearing reviewed reports from secretary treasurer and auditors. Election filled three year terms for Novak Aautiola Ahola Potter with others elected to two year and a budget and new constitution were unanimously adopted pending synod approval. A fund was set up for education of a church organist. Lunch followed.

Former Wakefield Trooper Promoted to Executive Division Posts

Col. George L. Halvers on announced new command officers for the Michigan State Police executive division at East Lansing and for the Romeo and Cheboygan posts. Lt. Peter R. Basolo, 40, advances from Romeo post commander to first lieutenant and assistant commander of the executive division. Basolo, a 1955 recruit, has served at Pontiac Wakefield East Lansing fire marshal emergency services and operations divisions and is a native of Stambaugh.

Immanuel Lutheran Church Sets Weekend Worship Schedule

The church will conduct a Saturday 7 30 p m vesper service at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Sunday services follow with church school at 9 am and worship at 10 30 am. Holy Communion will be offered at both the Saturday night and Sunday morning services.

Grandmother Sonia Keski, formerly Wakefield, welcomes a baby girl born January 19 to Mr and Mrs Robert Kohler of Waukegan. Recently Organized 4 H Club Elects Officers Plans Projects

A new 4 H Club organized on Friday Feb 24 at Mrs John Novak s home in Pike Location with Mrs Novak as leader will meet weekly Fridays at 4 pm. Officers are Stuart Novak president Randy Giachino vice president Dale Nurmi secretary Ned Russell Korpi treasurer. Bird study is the first project with bird feeder crafts to be made from bleach bottles. Plans include vegetable gardening hikes and picnics for summer projects.

Wakefield Council Accepts Bid for Fire Hose Purchase

The Wakefield City Council approved a $1,035 bid from Mel Servi of Pickerel for 500 feet of 2.5 inch and 100 feet of 1.5 inch hose with proper couplings. The meeting also named Michael Smolrich to the Planning Commission, approved Veteran Drive for the industrial park access, and W. O. Mackie Rd for Sunday Lake Heights. A $100 donation was set for the Gogebic Range Junior Hockey Club, and Derald Whitley was named maintenance superintendent.

Wakefield Booster Club Plans Membership Drive and Banquet

The Wakefield High School Booster Club, led by President James Dean, outlines plans for the annual athletic banquet at Lakeside Veterans Hall on March 10 with a potluck setup. They also announce a pasty sale in April, a forthcoming weight lifting equipment purchase with the Board of Education, and a fundraising effort through Cardinal ball point pens. A membership drive will start soon, with next meeting set for February 10 at 7 p.m. at the high school, aiming to enlist more parent support for Wakefield athletics.

Miss Donna Laessig Weds Tim Beber in Wakefield

Miss Donna Laessig daughter of Mr and Mrs Donovan Laessig Wakefield was given in marriage to Tim Beber son of Mrs Celeste Beber Wakefield on Saturday January 25 at 1 00 pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev Joseph Kichak officiating. The bridesmaid was Bette Beber and best man Tom Beber. A reception followed at the Laessig home. The bride is a senior at Wakefield High School and the groom a junior at Michigan Tech. Attending included guests from Houghton Iron River Mich Ironwood and Duluth.
