Wakefield Man Kenneth Laessig Confirmed Dead in Korea POW Camp
Kenneth F. Laessig 19 of Wakefield was reported missing in action in Korea on July 12 1950 and later confirmed dead from malnutrition while a prisoner of war. He was born in Stratford Wis and enlisted at 17 in 1949. He leaves his mother Mrs Oliver Willing two brothers James and Donald and a stepdaughter Trudy.

Tragic Toboggan Crash Claims 12-Year-Old John Mattila
John Mattila aged 12 died from internal injuries after a toboggan tied to a car collided with a parked vehicle on County Line road near Wakefield. He had been in the sixth grade at McDonald School and was adopted by Mr and Mrs Ernest Mattila. Funeral services were held at Frick Funeral Home with burial in Lakeside Cemetery. Madill County authorities reported the other rider John Kiv uninjured and the driver Clifford Mattila 17 was the step brother of the victim. The father John Willing was killed last December by a falling tree while working in the woods north of Wakefield. Surviving are his parents sisters and the step brother.

Services For Rev. J. H. Oatey Planned For Monday
Funeral services for the late Rev Joseph H. Oatey 74 will be held Monday at 1 pm at the Methodist church. The Rev Charles Wolfe will preach with the Rev R R Terwilliger assisting. Interment will follow in Ishpeming cemetery with services at Mudge Funeral Home Tuesday after. He died Wednesday evening at 312 Brotherton street after a long illness. He served Wakefield from 1942 to 1949 and was active in Rotary Eastern Star and Masonics. He is survived by his wife and one son Robert in Cincinnati with other relatives in England.
