John Ronn 56 Dies After Garage Fire and Illness

John Adolph Ronn 56 Wakefield Township died at 12 15 a m Tuesday after two days of illness He owned Sunday Lake Garage once Charles Lamps Blacksmith Shop He extinguished a Saturday garage fire without calling the fire department He planned to develop Washburn Gold and Silver Mine tours He married Sylvia Jurma July 2 1933survived by wife son Richard John Kenosha three sisters and three grandsons Funeral from First Lutheran Church Friday at 2 p m with Rev Rudolph Kemppainen assisting Memorial chapel open for visitation

Wakefield Rotary Hosts Ironwood Chamber Meeting

The Wakefield Rotary Club attended the Ironwood Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at Big Powderhorn Chalet. Rev Kenneth Moreland gave invocations as officers were installed. Er win Carlson became Chamber president, and Win Schuler spoke on Tourism Comes of Age urging four season promotion and broader advertising to attract visitors and scouts.

First Lutheran Luther League Meets In Church Parlor

The Luther League of Fifth Lutheran met Tuesday evening in the church parlors. President Joann Perry presided as devotions and a responsive reading were led by Barbara Hill. Greta Berg read the secretary’s thank you notes for holiday favors to Gogebic Hospital patients.

Three Receive Degrees At Northern Michigan U

Northern Michigan University held a mid year commencement on Saturday January 16 with 112 degree candidates including 14 master of arts recipients. The address on Education in an Era of Rapid Change was delivered by Dr. Walter F. Johnson of Michigan State University. Wakefield applicants included Elmer Haukkala David Koski Rosemarie Arnestad and Marenisco resident Sylvia Saari.

Verle Witta Named Freshman Phi Eta Sigma Inductee

Verle H. Witta of Wakefield, a Ferris State College Pharmacy freshman, was among 22 students elected to Phi Eta Sigma the national freshman honor society. The group honors high scholastic achievement with a 3.5 or higher average, and Witta was initiated during the winter term installation on January 16.

Indianhead 4H Group Meets at Margo Henderson Home

The Indianhead 4H group met January 11 at Margo Hendersons home. The meeting covered plans for upcoming work meetings and parties in the coming months. Members then worked on sewing projects.

Funeral Services Held For Philip Mattila 78

Philip Mattila a Wakefield resident died Sunday at Divine Infant Hospital after a long illness born in Finland in 1886 he came to the United States in 1903 worked at Castile Mine and Summit Dairy before retirement He married Elma Erickson and later Ida Salo surviving family includes three daughters a stepson a sister and seven grandchildren Funeral services were conducted at First Lutheran Church with burial at Lakeside Cemetery.

VFW Auxiliary Met Wednesday at the Post Quarters

The VFW Auxiliary met at the Post Home on Lake Shore Drive for a business session. Reports praised hospital gratitude for Thanksgiving centerpieces and hospital favors, noted rest home cards, thanked a patriotic essay winner, and announced insurance approval.
