P-M Co Ships 9 Million Tons Of Iron Ore In 1954
The Lake Superior district mines of Pickands Mather and Co shipped 9,149,277 tons of iron ore in 1954. Output by Minnesota ranges, Gogebic range, and Menominee range totaled with key figures for Cary, Newport, Erwin, Palms-Anvil, Sunday Lake, Loomis and Plymouth sites. The Peterson mine at Bessemer neared completion of its surface plant and shaft depth reached 3,726 feet.

First Lutheran Elects Church Officers Sunday
Members of the First Lutheran church council were elected at a Sunday congregational meeting led by Rev. S. V. Autere. Rudolph Jarvi, William Hanganen and Lauri Maki were named three year members. William Lane and Henry Poikonen as one year alternates. The council also includes Sam Mettila, Ronald Pikka, Nels Seppa, Andrew Luoma, Bruno Saari and Nels Pihlaja. The building program reported a 15000 dollar expenditure for interior renovation, basement improvements, and steeple repainting. The pastor was elected president with Mettila as vice president, Saari as secretary, Seppa as assistant, and Pikka as treasurer. A committee was named to study proposed new by laws for the Suomi Synod.

Manistique to Host 1955 American Legion Convention
The 1955 Upper Peninsula American Legion convention will be the largest ever in Manistique. Four day session runs June 16 to 19 with acts by the Zouaves from Jackson and the Canadian Sault bagpipe band. Also on program are the Detroit Charles Young Drum and Bugle Corps and a Hollywood project with Danny Kaye.

The program will cover army and air force programs military education and opportunities for study in sciences and engineering with talks and films. Union Telephone to Build Central Office in Owasso
Douglas Trezise district manager of the Union Telephone Co. announced a new central office building in Owosso district. The $300,000 project will house automatic equipment and company offices serving about 13,000 installations in the Owosso Muskegon Flint Alpena area serving roughly 80,000 subscribers. Trezise is son of H L Trezise and joined the company in 1951 after graduating Michigan State College.

Wakefield Fire Department Reports Last Year Losses
The Wakefield fire department reported total estimated fire loss of 300 dollars for the previous year after answering 30 calls. Two township blazes caused about 200 dollars loss with most alarms from chimney and overheated oil burner fires totaling 14. Other incidents included six residential fires, five grass fires, two car fires, one barn fire, and one false alarm.

Kenneth Duncan was named president of the Duluth Symphony Orchestra association this week, succeeding Mrs. Wildey H Mitchell who led the group for five years. U Turn Prohibition at Sunday Lake and Hancock Intersections
The City Council adopted a ban on U turns at the junctions of Sunday Lake with Hancock Pierce Harrison and Putnam streets after mayor Joe Patyk recommended the measure. City Averts Shortfall by Borrowing for 1955 Taxes
