Wakefield City Grants Fifteen Soft Drink Licenses

Fifteen licenses to sell soft drinks in Wakefield were granted by the city commission at its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon. The commission voted separately on many applications. Three licenses were denied. eight were approved by three to two votes, while seven were granted unanimously. The official proceedings publish the vote details.

Gogebic iron range ships 1927 ore total drop

The Gogebic iron range in Michigan, the westernmost and youngest, shipped 6,597,556 gross tons of iron ore by lake in 1927, down from 7,018,040 in 1926. Rail and boat splits are noted. mining activity centers include Montreal Mtawa group, Carer, Townsite, Pabst shaft repairs, Newport, River Iron Mining Co properties, and new electric equipment at several shafts. The report recounts production by multiple mines and the scale of operations across the Gogebic range.

Blizzard Strikes, Halting Traffic For Two Days

A severe winter storm Thursday and Friday halted most traffic and closed businesses and recreational activities. Strong northwest winds piled deep snow drifts along streets and highways. Snowfighting crews fought the blizzard until late Thursday night, then withdrew until Friday afternoon as conditions eased. Loggers benefited as warm days ruined roads and forced halts in cutting and hauling logs.

Wakefield to Host District Basketball Tournament

Wakefield has been awarded the district Class B or C basketball tournament for the state. The event will take place March 2 and 3 at the Community Gymnasium with several high schools likely to participate including Tron River Crystal Falls Stambaugh and schools from the South Shore as far east as Sidnaw.

Bids Sought for Graveling of US2 Between Gogebie and Watersmeet

County road engineer C F Wiebier announced plans to seek bids soon for gravelling 17.5 miles of the grade on US2 from Gogebie Station to Watersmeet indicating concrete paving is not planned this summer. The project aims to open the road to traffic early in the summer to speed hauling before snow melts.

Mer Ranes Phan 986 Sale Plans For Feb 11 Event

Members of the commercial association are completing plans for their first community sale day set for February 11. A committee was appointed to arrange dog and sled races and award prizes. The plan calls for a US cent sale inviting every merchant to participate with exceptional value at that price.

City Budget Published For 1928 In Proceedings

The 1928 city budget is printed in this week's city proceedings. A hearing on the budget is set for next Wednesday evening. After the hearing the annual appropriation bill will be presented and adopted by the city commission.

Blue Devils Set to Visit Wakefield Next Wednesday

Wakefield hosts Ontonagon Wolverines in a midweek matchup while Crystal Falls Ramblers beat Menominee Lions and Norway Cardinals visit next Saturday. After the game a Community Building dance hosted by the Wakefield Athletic Club and American Legion with music by the Red Jackets. admission one dollar.

Finnish Church Worker Dies of Long Malady

Mrs. John Laaksebariu died at the family home Saturday morning after an illness of more than two years. She was HM years old and had lived in Wakefield eleven years. Born in Finkind in September she came to Wakefield from Finland in June 116. She married John Laaksoharju a month later. They had two children, a son Bin and a daughter BMS, who with the husband survive. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Pouska, and four sisters and five brothers in Finland, survive. She was a member of the Finnish Lutheran Church which conducted funeral services Wednesday afternoon.
