Wakefield area religious and community notes detail a Busy week with the Naami Circle meeting March 1 at 2 pm, Lenten services at First Lutheran and Newport, LCW activities, hospital news, and 4-H and youth events. Several members travel, study, or host gatherings, and a church program includes letters by Paul and notable figures.
Wakefield PTA celebrated Founders Day on Monday presenting a 16 inch globe on a movable frame to the school in honor of past presidents. A $10 gift to the National PTA was approved. Mrs. Ben Dianich and Mrs. A Goodney led performances with Miss Barbara Schoeb singing God Bless America. A Celebrity Auction featured donors including Ironwood Mayor Al Wright and Gov. George Romney. Barringer-Reuse wedding followed later that day at St Pauls Lutheran Church Skokie IL.
Rep Russell Hellman of Dollar Bay spoke with George Colberg noting that the amendment to the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption Law allowing seniors on leased land has passed the House and Tax Committee and is now in the Senate with a Senate vote expected this week.
MacDonald Grade School presented a February birthday program at the MacDonald Junior High Auditorium on Tuesday Feb 22. Students performed a sequence of pledges songs poems and choral readings about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, with grades 1 through 6 contributing through various numbers and a Bill of Rights play. Announcer Joseph Piccidi and music supervisor Miss Barbara Schoeb led the event.
The Wakefield Rotary Club at Lakeview Inn heard three Wakefield High School seniors discuss term papers on The British Commonwealth of Nations Winston Churchill and Crime A Social Problem. Guest visitor Roy Hopkins attended. Athletic Banquet planned March 7 at Immaculate Conception Parish Hall with James Trethewey as guest speaker. Tickets available from sponsoring clubs.
First Lieutenant Robert G. Schiltz son of Mrs Marie Schiltz 708 Hancock Street completed the two week Tactical Air Control course at Naval Amphibious School Little Creek Va The program covered amphibious operations map reading photo interpretation radio operation air support and air power organization in the Navy Marine Corps and Air Force Schiltz a Northern Michigan University graduate enlisted in October 1959 Five candidates file petitions for city council seats in which Olga Hanson Walter Nunimaker Ward Zuidmulder Andrew Forte and John Pietchak seek three vacancies with terms of Hanson Nunimaker and Mackie expiring in April Mackie has not indicated another run.
Wakefield City Police urge residents to control dogs running at large causing disturbances. Chief Valesano notes some owners ignore leash laws and warns violators may face summons or missing pets. Dog disturbances have been especially noted near the high school area.
Darlene Borgaro formerly of Wakefield is chosen as main instructor for Makeup Classes in the Modeling Schools of St. Louis County. She will train consultants as assistants. the schools serve about 399000 people with graduates sent nationwide for advancement. Borgaro is an Academy of Professional Makeup graduate with top grades in makeup business and leadership.
Sixteen Wakefield High School seniors passed the State Competitive Scholarship tests under the Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority. Of 23 testers on November 21, 1965, all achieved 88 points or more, with Wakefield’s median at 100 and state median at 91. The Wakefield Woman's Club meets in the high school cafeteria at 8 30 PM on Wednesday March 2 with a program by art instructor Michael Vincent on observation in art. Musical selections by Wakefield High School students Marla Martinson and Sandra Graves. The Diamond Jubilee theme features history of the club since 1919. Hostess committee led by Mrs John Haglund includes Mrs Florence Bordeaux and Mrs Roy Johns.
Attendees at the Annual District 15 meeting at Northwoods Supper Club in Marquette included Mrs. Carl R. Olson and Mr. Carl W. Maki. Seth Fisher spoke on district achievements while Morgan Olson discussed Midland identification program expansion. J W Koski and Clifford Jarvela presented management and district reports. Elections were held for Midland Directors and committees as 18 cooperatives attended. Midland Cooperatives, Inc. posted 1965 sales at 90.5 million with 10 million year over year increase and 2.5 million net savings across Midland and subsidiaries.
Purdue University released a midyear graduation class totaling 1252 graduates for degrees on June 5. Notable graduate includes Lawrence S Neznanski MS Electrical Engineering, son of Mrs. Ted Neznanski of 208 Hancock Street Wakefield. Wakefield meets Raraga Saturday.
